BMW has managed to ensure that the new M2 is a monster of a car and that it won't compromise when it comes to maximum performance. BMW's M division engineers are working on a new model that is guaranteed to excite the automaker's usual customer base and the M2 will make its debut in 2022.

Auto Express reports that back in 2018, BMW M referred to the M2 as its 'strongest growth driver.' The M2 remains a crucial model to the brand despite the fact that the M brand's portfolio has radically broadened in the intervening years, with more SUVs and now even more electric models with M division input.

Rumored to be codenamed G87, this new performance vehicle will aim to take advantage of the new 3 and 4 Series-derived platform that the 2 Series coupe is based on. Major updates will arrive under the bonnet and with the model's chassis set-up.

Be warned, this M2 won't be cheap either. In the UK, it will cost £60,000, which equals about $82,530 here in the US. Be prepared to get your wallets out.

But what is a BMW vehicle without an engine that can deliver incredible performance? It is by far the best feature of the M2 for many reasons, so let us find out what they are.

Here Are The Many Reasons Why We Love The New BMW M2's Engine

Central to the changes to the latest BMW M2 is the arrival of the German automaker's S58 engine. The twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder unit was introduced on the X3 M and X4 M, and more recently added to the new M3 and M4. It will replace the existing M2's long-running N55 unit, introduced in 2009, as well as the S55 engine used by the formidable M2 Competition and M2 CS.

Crucial features of the S58 engine include a newly designed crankcase, a longer stroke, a reworked cylinder head and a more reliable induction system, which uses two mono-scroll turbochargers instead of the single turbocharger in the engine it replaces. Rather like the older S55 engine, it also gets a gasoline particulate filter.

According to Autocar, the new inline powerplant, which will be updated to meet Euro 7 emission regulations, will be offered in two states of tune in a move mirroring that of the latest M3 and M4 - both with a 7,200 rpm redline. Unfortunately for US readers, the higher-output Competition model is likely to be only available in the UK for now.

Though many details about the M2's engine are still being kept secret, standard M2 models are anticipated to receive up to 410 hp, with the successor to today's M2 Competition set to provide up to 430 hp. The increase in power is apparently meant to be accompanied by a modest lift in torque.

With such wonderful engine output figures and new features, it is hard not to love the upcoming M2's engine. Still, there are other aspects of this car that look breathtaking.

What Else Do We Love About The New BMW M2?

Looking at photos of the new BMW M2, it is apparent that the German automaker has decided to give the M3 and M4 an oversized kidney grille. However, it is thought the M2 will retain a smaller version. The front of the vehicle will still be significantly different to distinguish it from the regular 2 Series; anticipate a more angular nose with a muscular front bumper and deeper, chiselled air vents. It won't take on the massive, vertical kidney grilles used to differentiate the M3 from the rest of the 3 Series line-up.

Leaked pictures suggest that the kidney grilles will move to a squared-off, horizontal design compared with the rounder look of the 2 Series. The wheel arches will be flared to accommodate the model's extra width and there will be vents on the front wings wearing the M badge. At the back, the signature 'M car' quad exhaust system will feature alongside a new rear diffuser.

Take a look inside the interior and you will notice that it is likely to benefit from a substantial upgrade over the normal Series 2 coupe in the form of BMW's new dual-display iDrive infotainment system. This setup houses the digital dial cluster and main screen, joining them together as one seamless display.

The M2 will enjoy the two-tone bucket seat design already seen in the recent M3 and M4. An M-specific steering wheel will house two red M mode buttons, which can be linked to customize vehicle mode settings enabling the driver to alternate between contrasting driving modes at the touch of a button.

BMW have done themselves proud and 2022 will represent an exciting year for them, as this vehicle is set to launch onto the automotive market next year. If you like the sound of it, be sure to get your hands on an M2.
