Things have been rocky in Detroit. Ever since reports started surfacing about the potential discontinuation of the famous Chevrolet Camaro, uncertainty has clouded the minds of Camaro fans all over the world. It has fallen down the pecking order over the last decade in terms of being America's premier muscle car. A continued drop in sales of the Camaro has put its future in jeopardy.

General Motors has never officially said that they would discontinue the Camaro brand, but they have never denied the rumors either. And that only helped fuel the speculation. According to several online publications, GM planned on discontinuing the Camaro line in 2023. But recently the story began to change. Because of GM's plans to build more electric cars, there have been hints coming from Detroit that the Chevy Camaro might go electric.

The future of the Chevy Camaro is up in the air, we don't know whether or not there will be another one beyond 2023. Or if the Chevrolet Camaro will go electric.

Let's take a closer look at what might happen to this motoring icon...

Compared to the other two premium American muscle cars, the Ford Mustang and the Dodge Challenger, the Chevrolet Camaro has not been doing well in the U.S market. Over the last 10 years, the Camaro has experienced a significant drop in sales. According to gmauthority.com the iconic pony car only sold 48,265 units in 2019 that is a big difference compared to the 81,299 units it sold in 2010.

Muscle Cars & Trucks have reported that plans for a seventh-generation Camaro have already been suspended. So unless the Camaro can make a dramatic turnaround in terms of sales its future looks bleak at best.

Is the future of cars electric? Well, Tesla thinks so, and now so does General Motors. Like many other car manufacturers today, GM plans on producing more battery-powered EVs in the future, but what does this mean for the iconic Chevy Camaro? Could we be about to see a battery-powered one?

In 2018 GM teased a new eCOPO concept car at the SEMA show. An all-electric Chevy Camaro that is capable of producing 700 horsepower. The reaction was mixed, to say the least. The Camaro is infamously known as being a gas guzzler, but that's part of its charm. Turning it into an EV could potentially ruin its legacy.

Although, turning the Chevy Camaro into an EV might be the only way to save it, so what would you rather have? A battery-powered one or none at all?

Whatever the future holds for it, its die-hard fans at least have the luxury of enjoying it for another two more years. And if the iconic pony car can make up ground on its rivals then it might have a fighting chance. But if it doesn't then Camaro fans may have to soon choose between buying a Ford Mustang or a Dodge Challenger.
