Audi A2 was from at least 20 years into the future. It boasted of a lightweight aerodynamic design when that was almost unheard of. A2 was the first mass-produced car with an all-aluminum body. The super-light frame in combination with a powerful engine gave way to brilliant performance on the roads. On top of that, it was exceptionally fuel-efficient. Some owners claimed their cars could return over 90mpg. However, as happens with all the futuristic things, buyers were simply not interested. To some, Audi A2 was very expensive, for the others, it was the weird design that didn’t hit home. The life of this brilliant piece of art was cut short simply due to the lack of foresight. Audi A2 was ahead of its time, and the auto industry has just caught up. There is a long way to go before they match up with the little car.

The Audi A2 was produced in Germany at the company’s Neckarsulm aluminum plant on a line exclusively built for them. These compact supermini cars were built by the German manufacturer between 1999 and 2005. A2 was unveiled in 1997 at the Frankfurt Motor Show as a concept car named Audi Al2. Launched as an MPV-styled five-door hatchback, just two years after the concept reveal, Audi A2 surprised everyone. It soon became a sensation among the experts for its unconventional design and brilliant performance delivered by a unique aluminum body and a potent powertrain. Unfortunately, the model failed to generate the same interest among the buyers, and it had to be discontinued in August 2005. Despite all the odds, the Audi A2 was a very comfortable and fuel-efficient car, and it will always be remembered as a doomed but brilliant little car.

Audi A2 was a wonderful car that failed miserably. In the 90s, it boasted a lightweight aluminum body, unbelievably good fuel economy, and a brilliant performance of modern standards. Put your seatbelts on, and let us take you back to the future.

When Audi revealed the A2 concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show, no one expected it to make it to the production status. It was largely believed to be a design exercise. However, they surprised everyone when they launched the car right after.

Expensively assembled in an all-aluminum chassis and a radical space frame design, A2 was more of a statement that small didn’t mean basic or inefficient. The Audi A2 was far from inefficient. An advanced aluminum space frame design with a double-layered floor made it incredibly light but very strong at the same time. The works are similar to how Tesla fit their batteries in their Model S. An optimized weight, excellent basis, and cleverly engineered fine-tuning meant an impressive drag coefficient of 0.25 that was lower than any car in the world when it was launched. Powerful engine options were mated with a five-speed automated manual gearbox and the electronic control worked like a charm. Despite being small and making just about 74 horsepower, A2 felt unusually brisk. It was light, responsive, and offered an intense driving experience.

According to Auto Car, Audi A2 flopped simply because of being ahead of its time. An all-aluminum body is considered the future of cars and the auto industry in general. Experts think it will soon be a steel replacement. However, it is a work in progress, even after more than a decade. The Audi A2 was from the future and the world is still trying to catch up.

Audi A2 Had A Fuel Economy Of At Least 20 Years Into The Future

Audi A2 had an exceptional fuel economy. Rumor has it that the creative brief behind the project was to build a car that could transport four people to Milan from Stuttgart on a single tank of gas. Well, the Audi engineering team did it or we wouldn’t be writing about it.

The Audi A2 was made of aluminum and aluminum alloy which kept the weight down and made it possible to use less fuel than the rivals using conventional steel frames. This means that an A2 returned over 50 mpg when you weren’t even trying. 70 mpg was an ordinary number, and some owners even claim their A2 returning more than 95 mpg (for example, Clean Technica), which is mind-blowing even by today’s standards.

Audi A2 was supposed to be a small Audi and not a cheap Audi. However, a huge segment of buyers assumed it to be just a cheap Audi, which of course disappointed them when they found the price out. As a result, the sales never really took off, and they had to kill the model. However, several modern cars (including some upcoming Audi concept cars) are taking after the Audi A2, and it has become an unofficial future classic. And while this is not all as there are a lot of wonderful things to be said about the Audi A2, we will leave you with that. We think we have made our point.
