At $5-10 million a pop, the Ferrari LaFerrari might be a dream car for most gearheads, but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, coffee, or even a glass of wine. This is an expensive car and even when new, was only offered to the crème-de-la-crème of Ferrari clients at $1.5 million or so. So when you live in Vietnam and are a little Ferrari-crazy, you go another way. Meet the home-built LaFerrari that looks and sounds almost, just like maybe, the real thing, but is a whole other beast from the inside out.

This home-built LaFerrari is quite the authentic-looking ride and from the video, at least, one cannot fault its hand-molded looks or the sound of its engine revs. YouTube channel NHẾT TV covered the whole transformative process that turned a very unlikely car into a LaFerrari, and the fans were delighted by the skill and prowess of the group, as well as the final home-built LaFerrari. Here go all the details.

Before we go into the details of the home-built LaFerrari, let’s refresh our memories with the original.

Made from 2013 to 2018, Ferrari LaFerrari kept the production numbers of the LaFerrari limited to 499. It was a car meant for the elite and was the first ever full-hybrid by the Italian luxury carmaker. Given that it’s a fairly recent car, resales are not common, but the price has certainly gone sky-high with the most expensive sale recorded at a whopping $7 million. In 2013, Ferrari sold the LaFerrari for $1.5 million or thereabouts.

Like every Ferrari, it bore a V12 mill, but mated the same to an F1-derived hybrid system to together jet a little under 950 hp, letting it fly from 0-to-60 mph in 2.4 seconds, and the quarter-mile in under 10 seconds, making it a supercar in both performance and price. The KERS energy recovery system unit in itself cost $200,000, so this was one car that came dripping money from hood to tail.

So what’s one got to do to get one, when you don’t have eight-figure spare cash? If you believe these guys then you simply build a LaFerrari themselves in their garage.

Turning A Broken Down Toyota Into A LaFerrari

The guys at NHẾT TV started with a very old, rundown Toyota (looks like a Crown) and then completely gutted it. All they used from it was the chassis and the engine. This home-built LaFerrari comes powered by a four-cylinder petrol engine from the Toyota Crown. The team simply cleaned and then spray-painted it for it to look new. The cool bit is that they then installed the engine behind the seats, to make their home-built LaFerrari a mid-engined car, like the original inspiration.

Of course, a 42-minute video reduces the amount of work gone into the car to mere minutes. The creators agree that while the idea of building a Ferrari supercar looks and sounds crazy, they worked hard for a whole year to make it, and want to hear from the fans about it. Given that they homemade a Bugatti Chiron as well as some other supercars, clearly by now, they are home-built supercar pros!

Most fans agreed that if they placed this car in a showroom, no one could know the difference, such as the quality of the build. Of course, given that it has a four-pot Toyota engine instead of a hybrid V-12, the performance will not be the same. Then again, who’s complaining?

After getting the engine, the guys built a custom frame in steel using measurements from the internet. Later, they began to apply clay over the frame and sculpted it with their hands to make a “statue” of the LaFerrari. Each mold is then painstakingly covered in fiberglass to create the actual panels of the car. Their skill levels let them create an accurate LaFerrari, leaving the viewers stunned.

After sanding the car down, they spray paint it yellow and then added the windows, a glass engine cover as well as the lights, and red brake calipers. There’s also Ferrari badging everywhere and after eight months of back-breaking work, and some money spend, these guys from Vietnam had a yellow LaFerrari to call their own.

Sure, it won’t go the quarter-mile in 10 seconds and the ride is not the same as a genuine Ferrari LaFerrari, but the accuracy of the design and the skill levels are mind-blowing. Next up, fans demand they home-build a Lamborghini Miura.
