For weeks, the Hoonigan contingent has been working on customizing a 1971 Chevy Caprice, a classic donk in a project involving eBay Motors, the company supplying the parts. While the venerable garage has done some unusual rebuilds like replacing an Acura NSX's V6 with a four-cylinder engine and dropping a diesel engine into a Camaro, here's one endeavour that's been going for a while.

Wrong Size Bushings Leads To Some Improvisation

The big tasks in this episode involve installing a layer of carbon on the roof and hood, but there are a few other detailed tasks to take care of first. One is to wrap the exhaust headers in thermotape to prevent the heat from melting the adjacent spark plug wires. That's one job that goes off without a hitch, compared to another item on the checklist: replacing the engine and body mount bushings.

It turns out that the bushings are the wrong size, making them ill-suited to help cushion the contact points between the body and engine mounts from the clunking and rattling the donk would get from travelling over rough terrain. A little improvisation, courtesy of a drill press and a set of hockey pucks, solves the issue. The pucks fit perfectly.

Meanwhile, it takes two mechanics to install the taped headers, which involves some awkward maneuvers. Snaking the two pieces from underneath seems to do the trick and it's a simple matter of bolting them into place. Then the crew creates some fuel lines, which are then added to the engine.

Then there's the issue of taking care of the rusted hood, which will be taken care of with one or two layers of carbon fiber, depending on its smoothness. Following that will be putting on a coat of resin and replacing some chrome on the edges. The hood's a bit thicker since it's not as rigid as the roof; one solution they ponder is to add angle iron to the carbon, which wraps around the edges underneath to reinforce the layer.

More Donking To Come

That was the bulk of the work completed and in-progress at this donking stage. But fans can count on two things: First, it's still going to take a while, and second, don't count on the Hoonigan lads to get it right the first time.

"We're men," said one cohort. "We don't need instructions. We're going to do it wrong 72 times."
