The Fast And Furious films are still some of the biggest selling and popular movies across the globe. And it showcased some utterly incredible cars, such as the Toyota MK4 Supra and the Nissan Skyline, specifically the R34. Prices for both of these cars are starting to go up and up, as they just both go through the roof. The Supra and Skyline were front and center of the first Fast And Furious movies, and Craig Lieberman, who worked on the early films, is here to explain why they drove up prices of those cars.

Sales Of Supra And Skyline Before The Films

From the years 1993-1998, just 11,239 units of the Supra got sold and as Lieberman says, that’s not a lot. Only 6,977 of those were turbo equipped Supras as well. When we look at the R34 Skyline, the numbers sold is around the 11,500 to 12,000 mark. This compares to around 10 times the number of Nissan 350Zs sold in that car's production run. At the time, it seemed like people in America preferred the Corvette of the time, so neither Supra nor Skyline sales went up.

Today, there are roughly around 9,000 R34 GTRs in the United States and the same number roughly of MK4 Supras. Due to the demand of these being higher than the supply, this has seen prices for both cars go through the roof. Twin-turbo six-speed MK4 Supras can go for $80,000. Low-mileage examples are going for six figure sums. Some of this can certainly be down to inflation, with $24,000 in 1994, the price of Lieberman’s Supra, being roughly $46, 680 in today's money. What else has driven the prices up of these cars?

Gran Turismo And 'Fast And Furious'

Both cars featured in Gran Turismo, and were in Gran Turismo 3 that was out at roughly the same time as Fast And Furious. The R34s rise in price Lieberman says is probably more down to the films than with the Supra. Many people in America never seeing one of these cars before the first film was in cinemas. We can attribute to some of the high cost of R34s down to the cars that Motorex, a company that used to sell these cars in the USA, sold at the time. They can sell for over $400,000. So whilst the films did play a role in hiking the cars prices, video games, inflation, and general rarity, are perhaps forcing the prices to go up more than the films the cars starred in.
