Toyota is known for some of the best engineering in the automotive world. Their engines in particular are legendary. The 1UZ-FE, which debuted in 1989, and appeared in the Lexus LS400 is a proven performer. They're sought after on the aftermarket and also serve as the basis for this superstock engine build. The folks at Hughes Race Engineering in New Zealand currently offer a fully built, prepped and dyno'ed version of the 1UZ-FE for sale today. Let's take a look at what these Kiwis cooked up.
On The Dyno
Sure sounds sweet, doesn't it? How does Hughes Race Engineering do it? They start with a stout race prepped block and heads. The unit itself however is quite robust to start with sporting 6 bolt main caps and belt-driven quad-camshafts. The stock 1UZ is oversquare with a bore of 87.5 mm and stroke of 82.5 mm. Hughes let's that out a little bit more with a .5 mm bore bringing the cubic inches up to 4.1 liters.
Next up it's fitted with a beefed up bottom end with lightweight pistons and rods and polished race crank with cross drilled oil holes. Up top are a pair of beautifully ported heads with giant valves, a Hughes ported and matched intake manifold, Kelford cams and beehive springs, and a Holley XP carburetor.
Those Kiwis Do It Right!
What does it make on the dyno? The HRE Toyota 1UZ Superstock Engine puts out 501hp and 378 ft.-lbs. of torque on the dyno. Hughes engineered the power delivery specifically for Speedway racing with a broad power curve and ultimate reliability lap after lap. Peak torque is reached at 6,250 rpm and peak hp at only 7,250 rpm, which is quite tractable for a 4.1 liter race engine.
Additionally, Hughes offers a comprehensive set of racing upgrades and options to suit your needs from custom dry sump setups to monster cams and Carillo rods. The base engine costs $30,500 and they do ship stateside. Rebuilds start at $5,900 and they stand behind every engine they sell. Buckle up.
