Hurst has been recognized for giving us a lot of shifters, ranging from simple mechanical components to fully-automated machines. And the Quarter Stick Shifter is among their splendid innovations.

Hurst’s Quarter Stick Shifter keeps you moving with ease, one shift at a time.

What Is The Quarter Stick Shifter?

This is an automatic transmission shifter that was designed to give drivers control over their gears. Unlike other shifters that are specifically made for races, Hurst’s Quarter Stick Shifter is made for both street and race applications, according to the manufacturer.

The Quarter Stick Shifter keeps you moving with ease, one gear at a time. A modification like this can bring a whole new look to your car's interior. Moreover, there are many cars that have been modified to perfection out there.

Design Of The Hurst Quarter Stick Shifter

Weighing at only 2.5 pounds, the Quarter Stick shifter is considerably lightweight, especially when compared to other shifters like the V-Matic. In spite of the weight, this shifter is built with a black oxide coated steel construction, 1018 hardened steel gate plate, and an aluminum shift stick which makes the overall product very sturdy, hence long-lasting.

The design also features a 3/5 trigger, and a spring-loaded reverse Loc/Out mechanism (which is explained below)

You also get all the important components such as the cable and, most importantly, the user manual. So hey, maybe you might not need that professional after all.

Park Loc/Out Mechanism

The best part of the Quarter Shifter has to be that it is very easy to use. Before we get into how the gear operates, it’s very important to know one thing: The Quarter Shifter comes with a special feature called a “park Loc/Out Mechanism”

The park Lockout inhibits an accidental shift from the park into gear unless you press and hold the trigger while shifting. Alternatively, you can’t shift from gear into park.

How Does The Hurst Quarter Stick Shifter Work?

As mentioned earlier, the Quarter Stick Shifter has a Park Loc/Out function, which basically allows you to shift through the gears without accidentally shifting into Park. The brand has also released so many other models, which were all made for that one purpose: to keep you from shifting into the wrong gear. This particular one is only slightly different from shifting a Hurst V-Matic Shifter.

That said, the Quarter Shifter has its gears well-ordered, with the Park and the first gear located its two ends and the Reverse, Neutral, as well as the Second gear located in between.

So let’s say you wanted to shift from the Park to the first gear on the other end. You would need to go through all the rest of the gears. To shift the car from park to reverse, you have to squeeze the trigger, pull back the gear once, and then release the trigger.

To shift from Reverse into Neutral, pull back the gear once, and this time without holding the trigger. The same applies to the shift from Neutral to second gear, before finally landing on first gear.

To shift back from First to second, just push it forward, as this part isn’t associated with the Loc/Out Mechanism. But you will need to squeeze the trigger in order to shift into the Neutral from the second gear.

Instead of squeezing the trigger from the neutral to reverse, apply forward pressure to the lockout switch, which is located just at the front of the gear stick. This releases the lockout. You can then push the handle into reverse. Finally, Squeeze the trigger and push the handle forward to shift into Park.

When it comes to installing the Quarter Stick Shifter, you might need some experience in transmission connectivity and drilling. And if this doesn’t sound like you, then consider hiring a professional.

Before you start putting drilling into your car though, you need to place the Quarter Stick on the transmission area first. This helps you to get a feeling of where you want the stick to be positioned.

Once you have found the right place, mark it and get drilling. Since the shifter has four holes, drill four holes into the transmission and attach the stick to your car. You can then use the cable to connect the shifter to the transmission.
