Family cars don't often come with a particularly cool design. You might get the occasional gem like the Honda Civic Type R, but, generally speaking, family cars are all about functionality.

Hyundai is a car brand known for bringing affordable and functional cars to the masses, but it is mixing things up with the Ioniq 5. This all-electric family hatchback isn't short on funky features and beautiful lines.

Car manufacturers are in danger of getting stuck in limbo as they transition from regular combustion engines to all-electric motors. Their electric car designs frequently follow the rules of the past instead of looking to the future. Hyundai may be one of the first to break ranks and pull ahead of the pack with the Ioniq 5.

The South Korean manufacturer is swinging for the fences with its latest family-friendly car, and it's packed full of great features. But which feature is the best?

Let's take a look at the coolest feature of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and see why there is so much buzz surrounding this car.

The Coolest Feature Of The Hyundai Ioniq 5 Is Its Looks

Let's cut to the chase; the coolest feature of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is its appearance. Hyundai is one of the most affordable car brands on the market, but that doesn't mean its cars have to be boring. Thanks to its sleek styling, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is one of the best-looking cars the South Korean manufacturer has ever produced.

It all starts at the front and the redesign grille area. Hyundai has done away with the idea of a fake grille and instead committed to creating a car designed to be run on electric motors. This is perfectly accentuated with pixelated LED lights in the front and rear; surely a nod to retro video games.

The Ioniq 5 looks like you could pick it up and put it on the set of Blade Runner and it wouldn't look out of place. While other family hatchbacks are focused on making their cars practical, Hyundai added a touch of class to its practicality.

Although Hyundai has been making electric cars for some time, the all-electric Ioniq 5 is a first for the manufacturer. It is the first Hyundai built using the company's new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). This platform allows the Hyundai Ioniq 5 to charge rapidly, going from 10-80% battery in just 18 minutes using an 800V charger.

The Ioniq's best battery is the 73 kWh version that allows for a range of 280 miles on a single charge with the 214 hp motor. If you'd like a little more speed with your Ioniq 5, a 301 go motor is available, which brings the range down to 267 between each charge.

Although it is a hatchback, the Ioniq 5 comes with an elevated ride height that puts it in the CUV category. It also provides an exciting lift when you put your foot down. At the top end, it will hit 115 mph, while the most expensive models can get from 0-62 mph in just 5.2 seconds. That's pretty exciting for a car that is a family car first.

Hyundai has made sure to think of the people who will be using the Ioniq 5 and made it an enjoyable place for them. There is ample space in the cabin for busy families, while charging ports are dotted around the interior for those needing extra juice for devices.

The inside of the Ioniq 5 is a peaceful and tranquil space that welcomes passengers and drivers to relax. Thanks to the large flat floor, drivers can fully recline their seats to catch 40 winks if they need to.

That's not all, though, and the Ioniq 5 is also designed with children in mind. The central console can be positioned throughout the front or rear of the cabin to act as a picnic table or homework desk.

Drivers of the Ioniq 5 can also have their fun thanks to the impressive 12.3" widescreen split-display digital cockpit. This infotainment system is smartphone compatible and offers simple and considered menus to make using it as easy as possible.

With everything already at the touch of your fingers, the Ioniq 5 has another trick hidden up its sleeve; paddle shifters. It's just another aspect of Hyundai's latest all-electric vehicle that will put the driver at ease.

You might think that because of its extended cabin that the Hyundai Ioniq 5 compromises trunk space, but it doesn't. Behind the rear seats, there are 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space which expands to 59.3 cubic feet with the seats folded down. It's almost the complete family car, so there must be a drawback somewhere, right?

Perhaps the only sticking point that could stop the Ioniq 5 from becoming a commercial success is its price. According to Top Gear, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 price ranges from $50,774 to $68,155.

This is perhaps a little more than people might expect to pay for a Hyundai, but it is an outstanding family hatchback. When compared to the competition, the price is worth it for what you get.

Not only do Hyundai Ioniq 5 owners get that sleek styling, but they also get a great range, express charging, and a relaxing ride. The Hyundai Ioniq 5's arrival is on the horizon, and it's expected to hit the United States in fall 2021.
