Hyundai, a word of Korean origin, means "modernity" in a loose sense. The initial logo from 1969 consisted of geometric shapes with the letters "H" and "D" in the backdrop. These letters are an abbreviation of the name Hyundai. The "D" had a curved right side, whereas the "H" had an extended right leg. The background is in the shape of a trapezoid with a sharp left angle. In turn, this figure is placed against the background of a huge ring. The logo is a simple black and white design.

In 1970, there was a tweak to the figures surrounding the "HD" letters. The previously circular border had been replaced by an elongated oval. In 1978, Hyundai fully revamped its logo, resulting in the creation of a new logo and the adoption of a color palette that was bright and vibrant.

Strict geometry replaced the undulating lines of the original design. The new logo had a horizontally arranged rectangle with the bold blue "HD" letters on the left and the Korean company name on the right.
