Volkswagen is rumored to be bringing an electric crossover to the US in 2020.

VW is making a big splash at Frankfurt. After unveiling their brand redesign with a new logo, sound, and overall look, the German carmaker then unveiled the ID.3 electric combat car for the European market. It will almost certainly remain a Europe-exclusive car, however, as VW is scaling back their small vehicles in North America since nobody is buying them.

Crossovers though--crossovers people like. Crossovers people buy. So VW has plans to bring a crossover to America for 2020, according to a new report from Automotive News.

The crossover will be called the ID.4 and be based on the ID Crozz concept that originally debuted way back in 2017. It’ll be an electric vehicle based on VW’s MEB platform (same as the ID.3) but will be larger to accommodate a bigger set of electric motors and batteries.

According to rumors reported by Motor1, the ID.4 will have an electric motor on each axle for a combined 300 horsepower. Electrek reports that the ID.4 will have a 300-mile range from an 83 kWh battery pack and it will support 150 kW DC quick-charging. That means the battery should be able to charge to 80% in about 30 minutes.

Volkswagen isn’t ready to reveal more info, although they do have a camouflaged prototype on display at Frankfurt. It looks similar to the ID Crozz, although a little more plain Jane than the concept.

If the ID.4 arrives in 2020 as expected, it will be competing against the upcoming Ford Mustang-inspired crossover as well as Tesla’s Model Y. The Tesla is expected to have a range of around 370 miles as with the current Tesla models, while the Mustang-Cross is supposed to be similar and have a bit more of a performance angle to it. We can see the ID.4 nestling into this segment with a price advantage that might set it apart from the crowd and appeal to price-conscious environmentalists.
