When GM decided to pull the plug on its much-maligned Hummer nameplate in 2009, the brand seemed to be a lightning rod for critics bemoaning the excesses of the decade. It now seems that GM is the one with the last laugh as Hummer is coming back as the antithesis of what it once represented, an electric line of trucks and SUV’s under the GMC brand. This phoenix-like resurrection seems to be nothing short of extraordinary, so let us take a look at what the forthcoming Hummer vehicles will be like once they make their actual debut sometime late in 2021.

GM has been remarkably tight-lipped about the Hummer, but we have gathered enough pertinent information from various sources to be able to form a more-or-less coherent picture of the upcoming trucks and SUV’s. You read that correctly - the new GMC Hummer line will include both a pick-up truck and a full-fledged SUV. GM was supposed to unveil the vehicle on May 20, but we all know what COVID-19 did to their and everyone else’s best-laid plans.

Regardless, it will likely be the earliest debut for an electric truck, if GM President Mark Reuss' early statements hold true, and beat the much-hyped Tesla Cybertruck, the Rivian and others to the market. And for those who are hoping for some sort of aesthetic continuity from the old boxy Hummers of the 2000’s, your wishes will probably come true, judging by GMC's single teaser image released thus far (see below)

GMC has already confirmed that Hummers will be manufactured at General Motors' Detroit Hamtramck assembly plant, and will come in several trims with some boasting up to 3 electric motors and use the company's new Ultium battery system with up to 200 kWh of battery storage.

GM also just announced that the Hummer EV will have a targa-style roof for a unique “unique open-air experience” with easily removable “roof panels and front T-bar to let the world in”.  Thanks to its prodigious 1,000 horsepower, it will likely be among the quickest production vehicles on the market, including many supercars. Also, according to Motor Trend, the trucks will boast an air suspension, likely on the higher-end trim levels.

Based on all we have heard and can surmise, the upcoming Hummer line of trucks and SUV’s will be game-changers for GM, if not for the entire auto industry. Here is hoping the bitter taste of Hummer’s initial defeat can be replaced by the sweet taste of victory this time around.
