Nation’s first motorcycle company, Indian is back with a head-turner, exclusively designed to get you out of the 2020 woes. It is the most eagerly anticipated motorcycle from the 2021 line-up, the Springfield. Fun fact: Springfield was the original Indian factory from where the company operated between 1901 and 1953. The 2021 Indian Springfield line-up has two motorcycles: a standard Springfield which has been exclusively designed for long-distance touring, and the Springfield Dark Horse, a heavy-duty bagger. Indian Motorcycle had announced their complete 2021 line-up in September last year where they revealed the forthcoming models like Springfield, FTR, Chief, Chieftain, Scout, Roadmaster, Challenger, etc. The announcement came right after the company recorded its strongest sales quarter so far. The 2021 lineup boasts updated features, new model iterations, technology upgrades, and a host of brand new accessories.

As per the official website, the 2021 Indian Springfield Dark Horse is built for those who want more. The motorcycle will feature futuristic ride-enhancing technologies as standard features as well as upgrades. The 2021 Dark Horse is a beautiful combination of the traditional simplicity of Springfield and the modern technology of Dark Horse. Moving on, its sinister styling, streamlined stance, and powerful engine help it ride as well as it looks. Matte paint job complemented with glossy black accents give it a premium finish, and open fenders, mid-rise handlebars, and a set of accessories complete the whole mean look. There are three powerful colors to choose from White Smoke, Thunder Black Smoke, and Sagebrush Smoke. This specific year’s model is also special because it’s said to have been developed following the rider’s feedback. The all-new Springfield Dark Horse is made for the bold.

The 2021 Springfield Dark Horse comes equipped with a powerful Thunder stroke 116 V twin engine that churns over 92 horsepower and an incredible 126 lb-ft of torque at just 2900rpm, mated with a six-speed gearbox. It has a wheelbase of about 67 inches and a seat height of 26 inches, according to Total Motorcycle. There are three different ride modes for different riding needs and a better fuel economy.

Its look is inspired by custom bikes as the open front fender exposes the 19-inch 10 spoke contrast-cut front wheel. The big-inch bagger is blacked out to the maximum featuring premium matte and glossy accents throughout. The streamlined body and aggressive looks make a bold statement even when it’s standing still. To manage the power, a set of safety features aids have been added like ABS, cruise control, three different riding modes: Tour, Sport, and Standard, rear cylinder deactivation tech, etc.

Weatherproof remote locking hard saddlebags have been added for extra storage and safety for those long trips. Ride enhancing features like keyless ignition, a USB charging port, a tire pressure monitoring system, etc. perfectly complete the assembly. The ’21 Springfield Dark Horse is available in three colors that look as sinister as they sound: Thunder Black Smoke, White Smoke, and Sagebrush Smoke, all three available with ABS as a standard feature.

2021 Indian Springfield Dark Horse Compared With The Regular Springfield

Compared with the regular Springfield which comes with a Thunder stroke 111 engine, the Dark Horse’s larger 116 motor makes much more peak torque at a lower rpm. Although both have plenty of power for decent long-distance touring, the Dark Horse offers more power and excellent acceleration. It is also more responsive and agile. As far as looks are concerned, Springfield is more chrome and Dark Horse, as the name indicates is more blacked out. Of course, with the black matte styling, mini ape hangers, and 19 inches 10 spoke contrast cut wheels, the Dark Horse looks way more aggressive too, than the regular Springfield. There are some technology upgrades in comparison with the previous models like the rear cylinder deactivation system which automatically kills the rear cylinder when the bike is stopped in slow-moving traffic or otherwise, for more comfort and better fuel economy. The rear cylinder kicks back to life effortlessly and immediately when the throttle is hit again.

Coming to the price, Dark Horse will cost about a grand more than the standard Springfield depending on the color and accessories you choose. The 2021 Indian Springfield Dark Horse comes at a starting MSRP of $21,999 with Thunder Black Smoke priced at an MSRP of $22,499, and the remaining two colors at $22,999. Drenched in an attractive matte paint scheme with a blacked-out finish, the big and bold 2021 Indian Springfield Dark Horse is sure to turn heads while it roars down the road.
