For a while now, we have all been waiting for the new DeLorean DMC-12 to come from Italidesign. The original car might not have actually been very good, but it became a cult icon thanks to the Back To The Future movie franchise. This was thanks to its use as the time machine of Emmett “Doc” Brown. Now, at last, Italdesign have given us an August 21 launch date for the new car as well as a couple of other details.

The New DeLorean Is Set For A Pebble Beach Launch

The collaboration between Italdesign and DeLorean will at last get its public reveal at the 2022 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. August 21 is the chosen date, and it marks the next step in the relationship between Italdesign and DeLorean.

What the company also tells us is that the car will have the iconic gullwing doors and distinctive Italdesign styling appeal. But unlike the original DMC-12, the new DeLorean will have an electric drivetrain under the hood. While this might upset people in some quarters, the electric drivetrain should provide some future proofing for the new DMC-12 as the world edges towards EVs.

Currently, any concrete information on the new DeLorean is pretty scarce. There is basically no technical information out there on the car at the moment, but Italdesign states that further information on the car will finally get disclosed when the car is finally launched at the Pebble Beach event. The first step of this renewed collaboration, they say, will be styling, while also telling us to stay up to speed on the latest news. So, hopefully, we will get some information on the car before Pebble Beach, potentially some technical information.

The announcement of the launch date does get us quite excited about this long-awaited release. Troy Beetz, the CMO of DeLorean said “We are very excited that the next evolution of the DeLorean brand will be represented by our storied partnership with Italdesign” while Andrea Porta, Italdesign Business Development Manager said “we’re working on a car that is the authentic expression of all the services Italdesign is well-known for on an international level.” Of course, the hope for many is that Italdesign bring the DMC-12 right into the 21st century, but stay true to the heart and soul of the original design.
