Any company that has been around for 100 years has every reason to celebrate. In 1920, Toyo Cork Kogyo Co. Ltd., was born and today is known as the Mazda Motor Corp. To celebrate this milestone, Mazda is releasing a centennial edition of its best-selling sports car - the 100th Anniversary Special Edition Mazda MX-5 Miata - with a limited number arriving in the United States later this year.

In April, HotCars reported that there was still no official word about the 100th Anniversary Special Edition Mazda MX-5 arriving in the U.S. But now, U.S. buyers can have a piece of history, with the special edition offered in either RF (retractable fastback) or exclusive red soft top.

Based on the 2020 MX-5 Grand Touring, the special centennial MX-5 will be powered by Mazda’s four-cylinder Skyactiv-G 2.0 engine that has been tuned to provide 181 hp of max output and 151 lb.-ft. of peak torque. Customers can choose to mate this mill with a Skyactiv-MT six-speed manual gearbox or a Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. But of course, it comes with some twists.

In styling the 100th Anniversary Special Edition Mazda MX-5 Miata, the carmaker looked to its very first car -- the two-tone Mazda R360. As such, it is wrapped in Snowflake White Pearl Mica premium exterior finish, with a number of red styling elements. The RF comes with a black roof while the soft top is in red. A “100 Years 1920 – 2020” badge is found on the front fender while the 100th Anniversary Special Logo (in red and black) is found on the wheel center caps.

Inside, the centennial MX-5 Miata features a cabin marked by red leather seats and red carpet. The “100 Years 1920 – 2020” badge is also found on the red floor mats while the 100th Anniversary Special Logo is embossed on the headrest and on the key fob. As part of the commemoration, the key fob will be presented in a special edition box.
