One of Hollywood's finest has a wide portfolio covering fifty years of the silver screen. From playing a classic character like the Joker to being a part of cinema history in films such as Easy Rider, One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest and The Shining. Like all Celebrities of his caliber and financial wealth, he's amassed a luxurious life of leisure with properties in the United States' most desirable locations such as Mulholland Drive, Malibu, in and Hollywood.

Although he must surely fly, his cars are luxurious and would be fine to take the drive between them. Jack Nicholson is no model motorist though, in 1994, during a fit of road rage,th he smashed another driver's windscreen with a golf club that he had in his car; this would be the inspiration for his 2003 comedy Anger Management.

Jack Nicholson's Early Love Bug

A peculiar car found its way into Nicholson's possession. A 1967 White Convertible Beetle, having treated himself to the excess of the Mercedes 600, something less ostentatious, was called for by one of Hollywood's wealthiest actors. Volkswagen's first people car was synonymous with freedom and the ability to travel, but when Nicholson got one, it was a part of the hippie and counter-culture, an anti-car culture car.

The little Volkswagen took the soon-to-be star around Hollywood as he acted in his earlier parts before his breakout role in Easy Rider. The rear-engined beetle was affordable to buy and run, if not always reliable. The classic is fun to throw around due to its rear-biased weight distribution and inspiration for the Porsche 911.

It's An Easy Ride In This Mercedes

Nicholson on screen in The Witches of Eastwick drove a Mercedes 600, before purchasing it himself. The 600 is the most luxurious of this older Mercedes, a favourite of dictators the world over. Sadam Huessein even had one. It uses the 6.3-liter V8 engine that the top of the line Mercedes models had. In a dark shade of purple it contrasts amazingly well with the excessive amounts of chrome that call the 600 home, the paintwork even foreshadowed his role as the Joker in 1999.

Inside Nicholson's Mercedes 600 are lashings of natural tan leather both on the seat and across the dashboard. For such an old vehicle the 600 looks remarkably modern and somewhat like a yacht in how the dials present information and are constructed. The Mercedes 600 is in the care of the Petersen Museum, Nicholson donated it to them, the limousine may have appealed at first but became difficult to live with. However this example of the car doesn't sit unused, the Petersen Museum has entered the vehicle into classic rallies.

Nicholson allegedly had a Mercedes 500sl, which isn't impossible the SL is highly popular with filmstars across Hollywood. It came up for auction online, a 1990 car with 67,000 miles in 2014 with no reserve. All of Nicholson's cars have that tan leather interior, so with the specification being correct and the title being in his name, it's unlikely that this is a forgery.

The R129 SL is a lost generation caught between the classically beautiful R107 and modern R230 which came into production in 2002. It's an excellent Mercedes which can still be found on the used market for as little as $9,000, a bargain because it has this less desirable wedge design. Underneath the sharp nose sits a 5.0-liter V8 which sends the car to sixty mph in 5.9 seconds and is limited to 155 mph.

Something's Gotta Give On His Classic Range Rover

Nicholson was photographed stepping out of an upgraded classic Range Rover. Black with again a tan, natural coloured leather. The interior seems airy and more luxurious, not that the 4x4 needs to feel larger. One of his homes is in rural Colorado so a capable off-roader makes perfect sense.

The classic Range Rover is a peculiar choice though, it may have the ground clearance to get over almost any obstacle, but like many British cars it lacks in the engineering department and is plagued by the usual oil leaks, rattling and the like as well as engine misfiring issues, a level suspension system which is often unlevel.

Most owners complain about a gearbox whine, this runs across the range of three to five-speed transmissions. A more reliable and comfortable option would be almost any new 4x4 on the market. The actor is now 84, so a small bit of nostalgia can be forgiven. The Range Rover can carry the Golf clubs he'd need at the course.

Looking Toward The Shining Future

In 1978 Jack Nicholson was a part of a demonstration for an early Hydrogen car. The CBC reporter claimed it looked like "A regular chevy", but underneath it ran on hydrogen instead of petrol. This technology didn't see widespread adoption for a long time and still hasn't with only the Toyota Mirai making any headway. In the report, Nicholson makes bold claims about the hydrogen car, that it would shift global politics.

In 1978 the 1973 Oil crisis which saw Americans lining up for petrol was fresh in the memory of the car-buying population. This hydrogen system gets even more interesting though. The plant where the fuel comes from produces the hydrogen fuel by harnessing solar power to create electricity which in turn separates the hydrogen and oxygen in water, truly forward-looking innovation.

The company planned to put these solar panels across the California Nevada border and then build hydrogen stations separate from the gas stations along the United States' roads. These plans didn't come to anything but maybe if they had the 1979 Oil Crisis wouldn't have been so bad.
