Jaguar has plans to make a high-performance version of the I-Pace electric crossover, but it won’t be until after they make a few other SVR vehicles first.

SVR is the name that Jaguar gives to its highest-performance vehicles. So far, that’s mostly the Jaguar F-Type SVR with its 575 hp V8 engine, but more are reported to be on the way. Including Jaguar’s new luxury electric crossover, the I-Pace.

You wouldn’t think the I-Pace would be on the shortlist to get turned into a racing vehicle, but Jaguar already makes a racing version for the Formula E racing series called the eTrophy. A road-going version wouldn’t be that far off and would likely use many of the same features found in the eTrophy.

However, it seems that Jaguar has other cars to give the SVR treatment first. According to Jaguar Special Vehicle Operations chief Michael van der Sande (and speaking with Autocar), there are vehicles in front of the I-Pace vying for SVO’s attention. You’d think that would make the I-Pace SVR all the more unlikely, but he added that it’s a matter of “when, not if” Jaguar turns their attention to their electric crossover.

“Those cars all come from our base in Oxford Road and they’ve taught us a lot,” said van der Sande of the eTrophy I-Pace. “By the time you fit the roll-cage and race kit, they’re only slightly lighter than standard. But the battery’s duty cycle is very different in racing. We’ve already learned plenty about battery management, heat management and software development that could be useful for road cars. When the call comes, we’ll be ready.”

Currently, the eTrophy has the same powertrain as the regular I-Pace, which is two electric motors for a combined 395 horsepower and 513 lb-ft of torque. Zero to sixty takes 4.8 seconds on its way to a limited top speed of 124 mph.

The eTrophy is mostly the same but updates the chassis and suspension for a more race-oriented stance. An SVR I-Pace would almost certainly share the same upgrades whenever it arrives.
