Japan and the USA are two of the world's major automotive hubs, home to some of the world's biggest car manufacturers. Many of the most iconic and beautiful models can be traced back to one of these countries. However, for every classic silhouette these carmakers have produced, there are always some that missed the mark.

In most cases, these cars are either simply boring or just blend in with the traffic. Sometimes, though, a car is produced that is so hideous that it's a mystery how it ever made it to production. Which country has produced the ugliest cars? Take a look through these unsightly creations and decide.

10 USA: Pontiac Aztek

2002 Pontiac Aztek 2 Cropped

Produced between 2001 and 2005, the Aztek is one of the most famous ugly cars of modern times. With its squared-off wheel arches and awkward proportions, this crossover was universally panned for its looks as soon as it was released.

The car also features a front end that looks like it has been split in two, with what appears to be two grilles and two headlight clusters. The Aztek's designer, Tom Peters, later went on to design the much better looking Corvette C7, presumably with his eyes open this time.

9 Japan: Toyota Prius

Toyota have sold millions of cars all over the world, but they don't seem to have put any of that money back into their Prius design department. Since its release the Prius has always been ugly, with this latest version being only marginally more palatable.

The thin, spindly grille sticking out either side of the car's front badges give it the appearance of a comedy mustache, surely not what the designers were aiming for. The rear of the car is no better either, with the flattened trunk looking like the car was reversed into a wall and left like that.

8 USA: Hummer H2

The Hummer H2 arguably represents the worst aspects of American design. A huge, luxury box-on-wheels with too much chrome and an attitude problem. The Hummer H3 manages to tone this style down into something more acceptable, and the H1 is so bonkers it's actually very cool. The H2 is the worst of both worlds.

It doesn't help that many H2 owners love to modify their trucks in all sorts of terrible ways. Still, even the stock H2 looks hideous with its military proportions but tacky 'luxury' chrome and leather accents. This truck is a good example that sometimes, less is more.

7 Japan: Nissan Juke

The Juke has been dividing opinion with its looks since its launch, but most agree its odd shape and bulbous features put it firmly in the ugly camp. From the front it resembles an insect, with large, round headlights being the first thing the eye is drawn to.

From the rear it doesn't get any better. The boomerang-shaped lights seem to taper the whole rear inward, only to be met by the wider rear wheel arches that join a bulging back bumper. These strange looks have affected US sales, with only 10,157 Jukes sold in its last model year (2017).

6 USA: Chevrolet SSR

The Chevrolet SSR is at best a niche retro truck and at worst a horrible mashup that should never have been released. It's a convertible pickup with retro inspiration and modern underpinnings, which sounds like a recipe for design disaster.

Whilst it's not the most visually horrific truck ever made, it certainly looks confused. The grille and rounded headlights look like they've been grafted onto the truck at a later date, not designed that way. The folding hardtop roof means part of the cargo bed is unusable. The 5-spoke rims also look out of place on a pickup. All in all, the SSR tries to do way too many things at once.

5 Japan: Mitsuoka Galue

This strange creation from obscure automaker Mitsuoka is supposed to take cues from British marques such as Rolls-Royce. The carmaker's website says the name Galue means 'my own style'... which is a nice way of saying 'most people will think this car is ugly'.

Depending on specification, the Galue is based off either a Toyota or Nissan family sedan, which raises the question: why pay extra money to make your family car look worse? Clearly enough people decide it's worth the cost as the carmaker has been making a variety of ugly cars since 1968.

4 USA: Chrysler PT Cruiser

The PT Cruiser was an attempt to create a retro-styled, modern American cruiser. The result is a strangely shaped car that resembles a cargo van from some angles and family-sized Plymouth Prowler from others.

Widely criticized as one of the ugliest American cars of all time, the PT Cruiser did also have plenty of fans, and sold well throughout its ten year lifespan. The convertible version of the car is even more of an eyesore, sporting a support bar above the front headrests to ensure the roof stays attached.

3 Japan: Honda Ridgeline

2006 Honda Ridgeline Silver

Honda are a respected automaker with a reputation for delivering great cars, but the first generation Ridgeline never quite hit the mark in the design department. It seems Honda prioritized function over design, as everything on the truck works to be functional but visually boring.

The front headlights seem too small for the rest of the truck, and the whole front profile has too many rectangular slats to look good. The high, sloping sides of the cargo bed also clash with the square edges of the rest of the truck. This make the Ridgeline look strange enough to class as genuinely ugly.

2 USA: Pontiac Trans Sport

A practical minivan for the whole family, the Trans Sport took all of the worst quirks of nineties design and combined them into one ugly van. Thin, square headlights led into a sloping hood with the windscreen at almost the same angle.

This led to a stretched-out, wedge shaped front end that looked completely out of place with the rest of the van's proportions. Some of these vans even came with whitewall tires which further confused the design: was it supposed to be a retro-inspired look, a futuristic design or just a practical van? It somehow managed to look like all and none of those things at the same time.

1 Japan: Toyota WiLL Vi

This strange JDM model is based on a standard Toyota Yaris, but has had a complete body overhaul. Why Toyota decided this design was production worthy is a good question as it only ended up being produced between 2000-2001.

The car was supposed to appeal to a younger demographic, as of course what young people want is a semicircular car with inexplicable grooves over most of the body panels. Despite being only sold in Japan the sheer weirdness of these cars means they can be found all over the world in imported collections and as oddities at car shows.
