Jay Leno continues his most excellent quarantine edition videos with an entry all about a completely original Citroen Traction Avant. That's right, this vehicle sold in 1949 is still in its original condition without any major restoration in the past 70 years. It's a marvel of automotive engineering that really dates back even further in time. In the realm of classic cars, this Citroen is perhaps one of the brightest gems still remaining from a time long ago forgotten.

Advanced Technology

This particular vehicle is wildly advanced for its place in history. Traction Avant means Front-Wheel-Drive in French. For a vehicle from 1949, that's pretty advanced. However, while the car might be a 1949 model year, it's important to consider that it was made right after World War II, so it basically picked right up where the manufacturer had left off before the conflict began.

It's incredibly similar to the 1930s' models according to Jay. It also includes four-wheel independent suspension so the ride comfort is sincerely good. Compared to something like the Chrysler Royal he recently reviewed, this is far more advanced. What might really shock you is just how original this vehicle actually is.

Resiliant

For a car this old you'd think it would be struggling to make its way down the road much less run around town or a highway. Nevertheless, this Traction Avant is in exceptional condition despite never having been restored. Jay was so committed to keeping this car original that when he bought it he removed the reliable and modern electric fuel pump and returned the original mechanical unit in its place.

While the vast majority of these cars were sold with a 4-cylinder engine, the 6-cylinder is the one to have according to Jay. While the downside is a bit heavier steering, you have considerably more usable power; 70 MPH is no big deal despite the Citroen only having 3 forward gears.

He also mentions the mechanical sounds of the drivetrain you can hear especially well when the front windshields are opened up to allow airflow. That airflow compliments an already delightful interior that's comfortable, spacious, and well-appointed. This is truly a complete car with all the things you need to use it regularly without issue.

Game Changer

Citroen is a storied car company that has always seemed to push the technological envelope. The SM and the DS are well known and phenomenal entries into that cannon. Truthfully though, the Traction Avant set the standard. It remains the highest-selling Citroen ever with more than 750,000 units. Considering how well made this example clearly is, it's clear that it was well deserved. We can't wait to see what Citroen has up its sleeve for the future.
