Looking a bit like a refugee from the vehicle Voltron or the cockpit of a fighter plane detached to become a car, a rare Pulse autocycle has appeared on eBay for an asking price of $39,900. The vehicle, classified as a motorcycle because it does its business with three wheels or less in contact with the ground, was produced between 1984 to 1990.

The Pulse started its life as the Lifestar Autocycle and was the brainchild of aircraft engineer Jim Bede. If the little car feels like something James Bond would drive in the seventies, that's not far off. Bede is also responsible for the design of the BD-5 micro jet that Bond flew in Octopussy.

As the Lifestar Autocycle Bede made 40 examples starting in 1980. Bede later sold out to Owosso Motorcar Company who produced another 325 between 1984 to 1990 before Owosso closed its doors. Motivation is provided by a series of motorcycle engines including a 400cc Yamaha powerplant and a 450cc Honda unit. Later models would also use Honda Goldwing motors.

Driver and passenger sit inside in a tandem layout similar to a fighter jet. Regular car features are under the canopy including a steering wheel and reverse gear as well as a stereo and air-conditioning. Outside, the Pulse rides on two wheels with the outriggers coming into play during turns or when the autocycle is at rest. The seller was previously offering the Pulse for $44,900 before reducing the price to $39,900.
