President Biden's Chevrolet C2 Corvette Stingray is a beautifully restored example of America's original supercar. Owned since new, this 1967 manual V8 sports car represents the individualism, freedom, and excess that motoring in the 1960s came to symbolize. Cared for by Biden and his sons, this Chevrolet takes its place amongst some of the most interesting car collections. There's very little to find fault with in this powerful General Motors classic car.

Biden's Corvette broke again into the headlines recently. According to the New York Post, "Hunter Biden had access to Joe Biden’s beloved Corvette", the paper continues that this sat "alongside classified documents from his time as vice president". While it may sit central to a brewing political scandal, the President's Corvette deserves more attention for the gorgeous American automotive icon it is.

How Joe Biden Got His Chevrolet Corvette Stingray?

For those who don't know, the President of the United States can't drive on public roads. A moment of true heartbreak for a gearhead, surely. But when Joe Biden succeeded Donald Trump, the former vice-president didn't hand over the keys to his pride and joy.

Joe Biden is the paragon of American virtue. A cheeky smile, a public spirit, and a belief in democracy. But more so than that, President Biden owns his 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. A second-generation model of the American supercar, the Corvette symbolizes the great post-war financial boom that, for many Americans, sits at the back of their mind.

With a two-seater sports car, a few things come to mind. Mainly freedom, owning a two-door car symbolizes freedom from the need to own a practical car. Or alternatively, financial freedom can support such financial exuberance.

A period-correct and restored version of the Corvette Stingray, this Goodwood Green convertible has been Biden's for decades. Biden proudly is the only owner of this car since new. A wedding gift from Biden's father, a Chevrolet dealer, this car practically runs through Biden's veins.

A very dark shade of green borders on black. In his ownership, the car has seen a new engine and a fresh coat of paint. The interior is a blast to the past, with lavish brown leather covering lots of the car. While there are surely some GM scratchy plastics lurking somewhere, there is a simplistic luxury to the C2 Corvette. Although this does seem like a far cry from the modern C8 Corvette.

The C2 Corvette ran from 1962 till 1967. Well, the C3 Corvette certainly sticks around for a lot longer than the C2, as it symbolizes the highs of the 1960s. With a wide range of engines, the C2 Corvette used everything from a 5.4-liter small block to a 7.0-liter big-block V8. Really showing the age of the car, three transmissions were available, a three and a four-speed manual. But then also a 2-speed Powerglide automatic.

Biden's car has the four-speed transmission as a late example. To use this, there's a beautifully retro metal shift lever. This matches the chrome-laden interior and exterior. A look that most modern cars shun in favor of an aggressive stealth fighter-jet-looking cabin.

Under the hood sits the carburetted 327 V8 engine producing in the region of 300 horsepower. A respectable number for a manual, rear-wheel drive sports car. Although one must remember that the 327, in modern terms, is 5.4 liters. Modern hot hatches make this much from 2-liter four-cylinder motors. But so is the march of progress, and by no means does this make the C2 Corvette Stingray a slow car. With a weight of around 3,307 pounds (1,500 kg), this is lighter than most of today's cars, mainly due to less crash protection.

Back in 2016, the car appeared in Jay Leno's garage. Leno boldly claimed that the Corvette was the only car that Biden ever loved. With his time in office as vice president Biden only got to drive his beloved a total of 3 times in 7 years. At over 50 years old, this Corvette seems more spirited than ever. When Biden sat behind the wheel in Jay Leno's garage, the then Vice President immediately performed a burnout.

While antiquated and succeeded by six other generations of Corvette, the C2 Stingray is something rather special. The car's brilliance comes with a massive price tag. According to Classic, an aggregator of used car prices, the C2, on average, sells for $106,293. But certain specifications cost a little bit more. Those later cars with the four-speed demand a premium, and so do big block cars, with certain examples approaching $150,000. More expensive than a new Corvette, but there's a little extra charm and an added air of the American dream with the C2.

Although, as ever with cars owned by celebrities, this Corvette would be a little bit more than this figure. Special race-going C2 Corvette Stingrays already sold for millions of dollars.
