Trust Barrett-Jackson to land some of the most unique vehicles to hit the auction block. It's recently had folks bidding for the likes of Ken Block's insane Ford Focus used as part of his Gymkhana series, a one-of-a-kind DeSoto Adventurer convertible, and a silver, split-window 1963 Corvette restomod. But no doubt at least one auctioneer will have a gavel spit-shined for this roadster coming through the doors, namely a 1972 Dodge Viper RT/10 roadster owned by the Denver Broncos' legendary pivot John Elway.

This Viper's Got Less Than 8,000 Miles On The Clock

But perhaps we're getting ahead of ourselves here. Evidently, the Viper has been at Barrett-Jackson before, back in May 2020. According to Barrett-Jackson, the roadster has since remained in the auction company's showroom. But a year earlier, there was no shortage of media coverage—especially in Colorado—of Elway trying to unload the Dodge at a dealership he owned in Greeley, just north of Denver.

The big mystery is why no one's driven off with it after all these months, especially since the roadster was by all accounts properly maintained and has less than 8,000 miles on the odometer. One would have thought that this Viper, boasting a six-speed manual transmission and an eight-liter V10 engine churning out more than 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, would have been irresistible to car buffs and NFL devotees.

No Comfortable Amenities In This Dodge

Granted, the pandemic and accompanying lockdown that vaulted the economy into a nosedive might play a factor in sluggish auto sales, but the luxury car market hasn't been suffering. Those who adjusted well to the coronavirus and have enough loot to endure the financial doldrums continue to buy at will. And given how celebrity-crazed the U.S. can be, picking up a Viper owned by a star gridiron athlete seems like a no-brainer.

But then, there might be some other factors at play. The Viper, despite its powerful engine and aerodynamic exterior, was always spartan when it came to amenities. You won't find anything in a Viper geared towards comforts like air conditioning, power windows, or even a heavy-duty sound system. Aside from AM/FM radio, carpeted floor, and leather seats, that was it.

Only 300 1992 Vipers Ever Built

Even without those bells and whistles, the Viper to many fans was a joy to drive, given that it was engineered to accentuate the interaction between the driver, car, and road. But maybe others weren't particularly interested in that type of alchemy, since only 300 models were produced that year.
