The British division of Kia and the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center have developed a 428 hp Kia Stinger GT420 that is expected to provide stiff competition on track days.

Founded in 1944, Kia Motors Corporation, headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, is the Asian nation's second-largest automobile manufacturer, following the Hyundai Motor Company, with sales of nearly 4 million vehicles. As of December 2015, the Kia Motor Corporation is minority-owned by Hyundai, which holds a 33.88% stake valued at more than $6 billion in the company.

Though it may be surprising that Kia, which has no track affiliation, would create a one-off model exclusively for racing, the British division of the brand already had a pre-production model of the Kia Stinger that was used as a test model. The technical center decided that rather than scrapping the car, which had been damaged, they would overhaul it for racing.

The new Kia’s name, GT420, reflects the 428 hp and 560 Nm of maximum torque of the V6 3.3 Biturbo Korean sports car. The new model also has new components such as HKS M45il spark plugs for improved combustion, a K&N sports air filter and a Milltek Sport lightweight exhaust system. The new model far exceeds the standard model in terms of power given that the Stinger traditionally boasts 370 hp and 510 Nm as standard.

The transformation was made possible by the Hyundai Europe Technical Center in Rüsselsheim, Germany, which removed all unnecessary weight, including the standard seats and belts, airbags, sound system, interior moldings and mechanisms for the windows and sunroof as well as the engine covers and parking sensors.

In addition, lighter doors made from a single sheet of steel were added to the roof along with a roll cage, Sparco competition seats with harnesses and a fire extinguisher. This helped reduce 150 kg of the total weight of the vehicle.
