In 2008 NBC did a TV movie as a backdoor pilot to reboot the series with a new Michael Knight, the son of the old Michael Knight. The name Michael Knight was an alias. Since the Trans Am was no more in 2008, the series went to Ford for the new KITT, the Knight Industries Three Thousand. In addition to its main form as a Mustang, it could also turn into an F150 somehow.

The car got styling cues meant for the upcoming Shelby as well as a supercharger and upgraded suspension and brakes. The hood scoops housed KITT's iconic red swoosh lights which should be standard on all self driving cars.
