Koenigsegg is one of the most talked about Swedish car companies of all time. Known chiefly for its insane high-performance cars, Koenigsegg was founded in 1994, making it one of the youngest automakers in the public consciousness. However, Koenigsegg didn’t produce a street-legal car until 2002; the CC8S. Since then, the company, founded by Christian von Koenigsegg, has released a string of extreme and ultra-expensive rides. Some of the most notable of the automaker’s cars are the CCX, the Agera, and the CCR.

However, in 2015, Koenigsegg opted to do things a little differently. While the Koenigsegg's cars are quite appealing, they also usually lacked much of what luxury cars their price tags typically have. However, with the Regera, Koenigsegg created a grand touring sports car that promised a much more comfortable ride while also bringing the Koenigsegg speed that gearheads love.

As with all of their cars, the Regera was a limited production car. Notably, only 80 units of the model will ever be built, which means this is a super rare ride that most gearheads will never get their hands on. However, this is still an exciting car. While doing things differently, Koenigsegg still managed to create a face-meltingly fast ride that’s still talked about by car enthusiasts till date.

The Koenigsegg Regera Is A New Take On The Hybrid

We’re used to fast and powerful hybrids, but the powertrain on the Koenigsegg Regera is unheard of and features a world's first. This car has a Koenigsegg 5-liter V8 engine with double overhead camshafts and a compression ratio of 9.3:1. The Regera also has three electric motors, one on each rear wheel and the other on the crankshaft. According to Koenigsegg, this paring of the internal combustion engine and the three electric motors leads to a combined horsepower of over 1,500 and more than 1,475 lb-ft of torque.

Despite this immense power, one of the main reasons this car is face-meltingly fast is the lack of a conventional transmission. The issue with transmissions is that the car going through the gears, even for an automatic, consumes energy, which makes the vehicle not as quick. So the Regera uses Koenigsegg Direct Drive(KDD) to replace the boring old transmission and gearbox. This system provides direct drive to the rear axle from the engine with no need for gears.

As for the battery pack in this hybrid, it’s a 4.5 kWh running on 800 volts. The battery pack is truly a world’s, as first previously mentioned, as this was the first 800-volt production car. It provides 525 kW of discharge and up to 200 kW of recharge, which is practically the same as Formula-1 cars, according to Koenigsegg.

The Koenigsegg Regera Is The Best Of Both Worlds

Cars with the Koenigsegg nameplate have always been renowned for their out-of-this-world speed and performance. The same is still valid for the company’s newer cars. However, what makes the Regera different is that this one comes with many creature comforts that don’t exist in many of the company’s other models. For one, there are two cup holders. Cupholders may sound like something all modern cars should have, but they are rare in extreme supercars such as this. The interior of the Regera is the definition of elegance and could be purchased in either leather or Alcantara. The company also put a great deal of work into designing the function buttons to light them.

The other thing that makes this car the best of both worlds is Koenigsegg’s clutch-slip mechanism. This mechanism uses hydraulic coupling to convert torque. Notably, this mechanism gives the sensation of downshifting to mimic a traditional transmission and gearbox. The feeling of downshifting is often a favorite aspect of driving a manual, so this system helps make the Regera feel like one of the company’s usual mega cars.

Car companies of the caliber of Koenigsegg tend to stay in their lanes. This is because these cars are not mass-produced and are almost guaranteed to be successful due to their low production numbers. Hence, the company doesn't need to appeal to numerous people. However, the Regera showed what the automaker could do if it focused on a healthy combination of interior comforts and speed delivered only the way Koenigsegg could. You may not see this car pulling up to drop the kids off at school any time soon, but this is truly a vehicle designed for anyone with the budget to buy one.

Now, the company’s newest car, the Gemera is taking a page from the Regera’s book. This new car is the company’s first four-seater, making it much more of a family car. However, much like the Regera, this is still a super fast ride that is meant to be taken seriously regarding power and technology.
