When fears of a global coronavirus pandemic ground the world to a halt in early 2020, the automotive industry felt the strain along with most international businesses. As manufacturers shuttered factories or repurposed production lines to churn out medical equipment, dealerships closed their doors to customers and enthusiast calendar mainstays like the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance got canceled. The pandemic turned out to hit harder and last longer than all but the most prescient doomers could have predicted, and most automakers have faced significant sales slumps. Not so for Lamborghini, however, which proved yet again that the world's wealthiest simply haven't felt the ill effects of Covid-19 like the rest of us by posting a record-setting run of six months to close out the 2020 calendar year.

Changing In Mid-Stream

Lamborghini's stats for 2020 include a total of 7,430 vehicles delivered worldwide, which marks a decrease of only 9% when compared to 2019. However, taking into consideration that Lambo had to contend with a 70-day production shutdown during the height of Italy's government response to increased infection rates, that number comes across as something of a surprise. And, in fact, Lamborghini certainly made up for any drop in revenue with the record-setting six months of sales covering the second half of 2020, which also included welcoming back Stephan Winkelmann, who now serves as the simultaneous heads of Bugatti and Lamborghini amid swirling rumors that Volkswagen AG might sell both high-end brands to the upstart Croatian EV manufacturer Rimac.

As usual, the United States sat atop Lamborghini's sales charts, receiving 2,224 cars and was followed by Germany, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), Japan, the UK, and Italy. The Urus SUV served as Lambo's best-selling model, with 4,391 units delivered worldwide. Meanwhile, the Huracan saw a three-percent bump to 2,193 cars sold to go with 846 of the range-topping Aventador.

Additions To The Lineup

Like most supercar and hypercar manufacturers, Lamborghini has clearly realized that the more exclusive and expensive its products, the more customers will line up to drop gobs of cash. New additions to the lineup during 2020 included more than a few new product launches to fulfill just such niches, from the Sian Roadster to the track-only Essenza SCV12 and the road-going open-top SC20. But 2020 wasn't all capitalistic conquering for Lamborghini, which also launched a charitable effort with Lady Gaga to go along with the "With Italy, for Italy" campaign in support of Italian artists.
