Lamborghini Needs To Have Naturally-Aspirated Engine, Says Audi Sport Exec

Audi Sport chief Oliver Hoffmann says that Lamborghini will always have naturally-aspirated engines and the company is keen on staying away from turbochargers.

Hoffman has two titles in the Volkswagen Audi group, which is tied to Lamborghini, Porsche and Bentley. According to QuattroDaily, he's the Head of Technical Development at the Neckarsulm site and the Director of Audi Sport GmbH.

Speaking to Autocar recently, Hoffman claimed that the Italian brand "has to have" a naturally-aspirated engine.

“Lamborghini has to have a naturally-aspirated engine, no other brand stands for NA like Lamborghini," he declared.

“We are working very close with the guys from Sant’Agata. The only way to develop such kinds of cars is to share the cost for development work and to have a very, very tough platform strategy.

“The [current] Lamborghini Huracan is based on the R8 platform, and this helps us–together with Lamborghini, with Porsche, with all the sporty brands in our group–to share the development costs.”

With the future of the next-gen R8 still undecided, it's likely that Audi goes with "electric versus internal combustion", which means that V8, V10, turbo or NA engines could be out of the question.

“We have some good ideas for a more extreme R8,” the Sport exec explains. “We know the powerful exterior design of our racing car is amazing. People want to drive this on the street.

He adds that they are fighting to keep the V10, however. “We are fighting for the V10, but [for the next-generation] it’s more or less a question of ICE or electrification, and which kind of engine is useful for it."

Of course, execs are hardly commital when they speak on things of such nature but we're pretty sure the people who can afford to would take the R8 either way. As for the Lambo, the manufacturers will most probably stick to their age-old principles.
