Lamborghini sure is giving the V12 engine a swansong of a sendoff. Despite the obvious benefits of the Italian coachmaker's legendary powerplant and its simplicity, sound, and smooth-revving nature, the world of forced induction and hybrid electrification has simply forced Lambo's hand. But before the V12 gets retired for good, there will be at least one more in a long line of special editions to emerge from the Lamborghini factory, this time in the form of a just-announced, track-only Essenza SCV12 hypercar.

Throwing The Whole Bucket

Lamborghini has gone all-out for the Essenza, which will pump 830 horsepower out of its V12, making it the most powerful V12-powered Lambo ever built. And all the track-specific features boil down to impressive engineering feats like utilizing the ram effect at high speeds as almost a form of forced induction, plus exhaust pipes specially designed to reduce back pressure and improve the powerplant's unique sound. Meanwhile, power is routed to the rear wheels only through a sequential six-speed that acts as a load-bearing member to keep things stiff and light.

Look At All That Aero

The Essenza SCV12 was also designed to comply with FIA prototype-class safety rules—whether this means Lamborghini plans to enter it in endurance races remains a mystery, though perhaps bold some bold owners willing to risk their one-of-40 hypercar in competition will enter as privateers. And with aero details including a double intake system designed into the hood, a splitter, vertical fins on the side rails to direct air to the engine bay, and that enormous double-profile rear spoiler, the Essenza should be just about ready to go from the factory.

In a statement, Automobili Lamborghini's CEO and Chairman, Stefano Domenicali, said, “Essenza SCV12 represents the purest track driving experience that our brand can offer, an engineering feat that highlights the inextricable link between our cars and the asphalt of the track. Lamborghini is a brand constantly looking to the future and searching for new challenges, but we never forget our roots and who we are: Essenza SCV12 is the perfect combination of our unconventional spirit as a super sports car manufacturer and our true passion for motorsport.”
