What does Lamborghini's Urus super-SUV have in common with the pure electric Tesla Model 3 Performance?

What made the CarWow team put them on the drag strip side by side in their video?

The answer is that these two very fine but very different cars can reportedly run the quarter-mile in the same few seconds; so, it’s time to put them on the track and check if the figures on the paper stand in a real drag race.

Standing Start: Electric Tesla Against SUV Royalty

This Urus is the first Lamborghini 'SSUV' – a Super Sport Utility Vehicle, that combines the performance of a supercar with the functionality of an SUV.

Powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine producing 650 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, the Urus accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 190 mph.

An eight-speed automatic transmission and the permanent all-wheel-drive help manage that powerful and rather heavy 4,850 lbs-machine on the road.

Tesla's Model 3 Performance has two electric motors that produce 490 hp and 487 lb-ft - this is an all-wheel-drive car that weighs 4079 lbs.

The 0-60 mph time with the dual electric motors is 3.1 seconds; unfortunately, the Tesla has no gearbox to compare to the 8-speed transmission the Urus has, but you can compare prices.

Lamborghini's Urus starts from around $185,000-$220,000, but the car running the race today costs a hefty $320,000. When you put things in perspective like this, the Model 3 with its price of around 74,000 dollars is a very modest car indeed: all the more interesting to see how these two compare on the track.

There’s a traditional soundcheck before the race, and the Urus makes its point with a perfect sports car exhaust sound. This is the part where the Tesla misses its go - Mat can’t lose without putting up a fight, so he does some high-adrenaline drifting to warm his tires.

Three, two, one… the race starts, and the Tesla goes fast, it’s ahead of the Urus - but soon, the Lamborghini begins to catch up, and flies in finishing first, but only by a couple of feet.

Both cars make the quarter-mile in 11.8 seconds.

The launch wasn’t that good for the Urus, it had some traction problems, so the rolling race is going to sort things out. First, it’s a rolling race from 50 mph, and the Urus is in sport mode.

Now, again, the Tesla puts down all its power instantly and goes very fast, only to find out that the merciless Urus takes it down in the end.

CarWow's last run is from 30 mph, and the Urus is in automatic mode – the usual mode for driving in the street.

The situation seems familiar; the Tesla is much faster at the start, then the Urus gradually catches up and finally wins, but, the automatic driving mode gives it less advantage.

Finally, we have the brake stop from 100 mph, where Mat is going to save some face for the Tesla: the two hit the brakes as they reach the emergency line, and the Tesla wins.

For the price difference, the Tesla Model 3 definitely punches way above its weight and although it lacks the premium character, feel and style of the Lambo, it doesn't fall as short of the mark as we might think.
