When it comes to Super SUVs, no one really does it better than Lamborghini. The fabled Urus has been a core part of the Lamborghini range for some time now, and it's now perhaps facing its biggest challenge with Ferrari recently launching the rather impressive Purosangue. Lamborghini though do not really want to be left behind when it comes to the Urus, and they have recently launched a few other versions. Now, Lamborghini is going another step further, and releasing the true successor to the original Urus.

Enter the Urus S. This is the real continuation of that original Urus despite the recent facelift model, shown at Pebble Beach as the 2023 Performante, the hotter version of the Urus. But this is the true next-generation of the Urus. Lamborghini says that the new Urus version delivers increased power over the last generation, and with the luxurious versatility that has made the Urus such a famous car, and the ultimate object of performance lifestyle. This new S version will complement the Urus Performante, and form the basis of next generation Urus.

Of course, what everyone will be most excited about is the power that the new Urus S has. The new Urus S has the same upgraded engine as the Urus Performante, the Urus S has a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine under the hood that makes a rather apt 666 hp. Quite devilish when you think about it. It is though heavier than the Urus Performante which can shed some 104 lbs from the original weight, meaning the Urus S will have a slightly lower top-end speed compared to the Performante version.

When it comes to that speed, Lamborghini tell us that it will take 3.5 seconds to reach 62 mph from 0 mph, and the top speed of the Super SUV is the same 190 mph. The acceleration is two-tenths slower than the Performante, but it is good to see the top speed does remain the same with that same V8 engine. What makes the Urus S so impressive is its breaking performance. The Urus S is able to go from 62 mph and back down to 0 mph in just 33.7 metres, a very impressive number. The engine though is not the only place Lamborghini have worked on.

When it comes to the sound of the Urus S, Lamborghini want to work a bit more from the exhaust. To do that, they have retuned the exhaust system, to remind us all that the Urus S is a true Lamborghini just like the Aventador and Huracan. Lamborghini says that the Super SUV now has a more distinct start-up sound as well as a sharper note in each of its drive modes. Those modes are Strada, Sport, Corsa and Ego, while there are some off-road modes too which are Terra, Neve and Sabbia.

Lamborghini have also tweaked the styling of their new Urus. The front bumper for example is new, adopting more refined lines over the last version with a matt black painted stainless steek skidplate as standard. The hood is new and made of lightweight carbon fiber, and is complte with matt black air vents and there are various optional finishes and color combinations for these parts. Lamborghini has also worked on the rear of the Urus S, with a new rear bumper giving the Super SUV a more streamlined and elegant appearance. Matt black is present on lower parts of the rear bodywork, and the exhaust setup is of a twin-pipe design.

Reworking The Interior Of The Urus

While most of the changes come with the exterior and the engine, Lamborghini have worked slightly on the interior too. A fully-revised color and trim offering is inside the Urus, with the new Bi-color Sportivo and Bi-color Sophisticated the options available. These include different leather colors, with Blu Leandro and Verde Aura alongside tan just some of the options available. Lamborghini says that these new color and trim options help to underline the high-performance credentials of the Urus S, as the Super SUV enters its next generation.

It's going to be fascinating to see the reception that this version of the Urus gets as its rivals start to introduce more vehicles to the segment. You only have to look at how excited people have got over the Ferrari Purosangue to realize what is possible while keeping weight down, and putting power up. And at some point we are likely to get a hybrid or fully electrified model of the Urus too to really move it into the future. Even though it’s a subtle refinement over the last Urus, the new Urus S is anything but subtle. It is after all a Lamborghini!
