A leaked image of the upcoming 2022 Alfa Romeo GTV has surfaced on the internet.

Fiat Chrysler is looking to bring back the GTV name. What was once a sports coupe and roadster build from the mid-‘90s to the mid-2000s, FCA plans to change into a hybrid performance vehicle that far surpasses the original Alfa Romeo GTV.

While the original GTV was known for its distinctive styling and unique profile, it wasn’t exactly a high-performance automobile. Even the most powerful V6 available topped out at less than 240 hp and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

However, that’s not how the new GTV will perform. In FCA’s 5-year roadmap revealed last May, slides teased the upcoming GTV as having a hybrid powertrain with 600-plus horsepower, a 50/50 weight distribution, all-wheel-drive, and torque vectoring. It would also have a limited battery-only range along the same lines as the Honda NSX.

We also got a single teaser shot that showed a car very distinct from the original GTV. It had a similar front fascia, but a far more streamlined body.

FCA said that the new GTV would release sometime in 2020, but gave us little else in terms of details. We also haven’t really gotten many updates from Alfa Romeo to see where the new car is at in the design process.

Until now. Alfa fansite Club Alfa recently got a picture reported to be from a private Alfa Romeo event that showed the back half of the new GTV, and it has definitely evolved since last May.

The new picture shows a cabin that’s been pushed far to the back in the same style as the Mercedes-AMG GT. Prominent fender flares and a raked window line are almost Corvette-like in stature, and although the nose isn’t shown, we can safely assume a profile similar to other Alfa Romeos of today.

Autoblog reports that the GTV will have a 2.9-L twin-turbo V6 combined with some number of electric motors. We’ll have to wait for more word from Alfa Romeo to see just what will be powering their new beast.
