Lego has added the 1974 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.0 to its line of Speed Champions miniature models.
If you want to get a kid into fast cars, then may we humbly suggest Lego’s Speed Champions line? It has a bunch of very fast cars at very reasonable prices, such as the McLaren Senna, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, and even the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. They also have classic cars like the 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback or the 1970 Dodge Charger R/T.
And now they’re adding another classic vehicle: the 1974 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.0, better known as the Porsche 930--the first turbocharged production Porsche ever made.
Introduced at the 1974 Paris Auto Show, the first Porsche 911 Turbo was originally produced for homologation reasons for Porsche’s racing division, but quickly became a very popular model. The 911 Turbo was extremely fast (for the era), although prone to oversteer due to its short wheelbase and also suffered from extreme turbo lag.
Under the rear engine cover was a 3.0-L turbocharged flat-six producing 256 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. Power was routed through a 4-speed manual transmission, with larger brakes, revised suspension, and a stronger gearbox intended to withstand the engine’s greater power output.
The car quickly became an icon, and now Lego will let you take one home for the low price of $14.99. You can’t find a better deal than that anywhere. Trust us, we looked.
Lego’s 180-piece Porsche comes in all-white and boasts authentic details like wide-brimmed fenders and the “whale tail” rear spoiler. Unlike the original, the Lego Porsche’s windshield is removable so that the driver can be slotted inside. Also unlike the original, the driver sits in the middle rather than slightly to the left.
The model is 5-inches long, 2 inches wide, and 1 inch tall. It also comes with three plastic cones to mark out an impromptu racecourse on your work desk.
The 1974 Porsche 911 Turbo goes on sale August 1st.
