Lewis Hamilton is one of the fastest Formula 1 drivers the sport has ever seen. He is heading towards a record-equalling 91st Grand Prix win and set to take another record-equalling seventh world title. He has also lead F1’s voice for equality and social justice and has promoted the Black Lives Matter movement, and made a powerful statement about those who killed Breonna Taylor at the Tuscan Grand Prix. TIME magazine has named him one of the 100 most influential people of 2020 in the world, filing him under the “Titans" category.

A Post From Bubba Wallace

A guest contribution was made on the website by Bubba Wallace, NASCAR’s only person of color competing, with Hamilton being the same in Formula 1. Wallace himself has lead NASCAR’s own movement to fight for social justice and is set to join a new team in 2021 run by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, Wallace, of course, being the man behind the wheel, after landing a raft of new sponsors. He has taken a lot of inspiration and motivation by watching Hamilton dominate F1 the last few seasons, and his guest contribution was emotional and heartfelt.

In TIME Wallace wrote, “Lewis Hamilton is someone I’ve idolized. He’s poised to win his seventh Formula One championship this season, tying Michael Schumacher’s record. Seven is a magic number in racing. Dale Earnhardt  Sr., Jimmie Johnson, and Richard Petty have each won seven NASCAR season titles. Lewis, 35, is young enough to keep winning championships and setting new all-time records."

“I’m the only Black driver in NASCAR’s top level. So Lewis’ example—as the lone Black F1 driver—is particularly meaningful for me,” Wallace further writes. "He shows we’re out there doing it. To see him conquering the track damn near every weekend, it motivates me to try to do the same.” Hamilton has won six of the nine races held in F1’s 2020 season, the next race taking place this weekend in Russia at the Sochi Autodrom, where Mercedes has won every race since its first running in 2014.
