The alluring and svelte Lexus LC500 is arguably the sexiest shape ever to wear the italicized “L” badge. Powered by a silky smooth 5.0L naturally aspirated V8, the LC is a wonderfully tactile and engaging vehicle, regardless of its dismal sales. We are not sure whether Lexus is making any money off of it or if it’s bleeding yens with each sale, but the coupe does serve as a halo car for the Japanese luxury brand.

Lexus is not about to let the car languish in dealer showrooms. Quite the opposite, it’s been working hard to keep the car front and center and to milk its halo image as much as possible. To that extent, we have witnessed the 2019 debut of the very desirable LC 500 Convertible at the LA Auto Show, which went a long ways in helping us banish any memories of the unfortunate SC hardtop convertible of the 2000’s.

We were also pleasantly surprised to hear that Lexus has some upgrades in store for the coupe, and although they may be negligible as far as performance improvements are concerned, we are thankful for anything that may even incrementally improve one of our favorite old-school grand touring cars on sale now.

Less Heft, Same Deft

According to Lexus, the new LC will be 22 pounds lighter than the outgoing model, mostly due to new suspension components including coil springs, control arms and new, 21-inch wheels. Adding lightness wasn’t the only goal of the tweaked suspension. It also helps ride and handling, and is augmented by Active Cornering Assist which provides torque vectoring as it applies the brakes on the inner wheels during a corner.

On the Hybrid side, the LC500h gets newer programming for the shifting logic in its automatic transmission to help performance driving. As for other changes, 2 new exterior finishes and some new interior colors jazz up the options list, and Android Auto is available for the first time on the vehicle.

Keep on Keepin' On

The LC500 soldiers on despite the odds, and we are thankful Lexus is making incremental changes to improve upon its flagship coupe. Cars like the LC are getting harder to find, and we want to cherish it for as long as Lexus keeps making it.
