The Mazda RX-7 is one of those legendary JDM cars. Nevertheless, this Mazda could never hope to beat a 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 on the straight line, unless it’s boosted. For its latest episode of “This vs That,” Hoonigan arranged a race between a boosted RX-7 and a Corvette ZR1.

Hoonigan invited Lil Jerry and his 1994 Mazda RX-7 to race against Big Mike’s limited-run 2019 Chevrolet C7 Corvette ZR1. This would have been a one-sided contest in favor of the Corvette if the RX-7 is a stock model. But Hoonigan wouldn’t let the ZR1 have an easy race, since the Mazda on the other side of the strip is a modified RX-7 with a major boost.

Lil Jerry’s Mazda RX-7 has its original motors swapped with an LS3 engine with LS7 internals. The RX-7 also features a Holley throttle body, Holley ECU 8.8, Mustang rears, ETP 255 heads, as well as Toyo Proxes tires. With this setup, the RX-7 can deliver up to 500 hp of output, as sent to the rear wheels via a T-56 six-speed manual transmission. Interestingly, despite the changes, this RX-7 weighs light at 2,800 lbs.

Meanwhile, Big Mike brought his 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. At the time of its launch, many saw the 2019 ZR1 as the ultimate incarnation of a front-engine Corvette. It’s quick and fast, not just on the straight line, but also the corners. This is thanks to Chevrolet creating a great balance between drag and downforce.

Big Mike’s Corvette ZR1 came out of the factory already laden with lots of carbon fiber, even its wheels. This lightweight yet strong material allowed this ZR1 to tip the scales at just 3,664 lbs. Mated to a seven-speed manual transmission, its supercharged 6.2-liter LT5 V8 engine produces 755 hp of max output. Interestingly, while it's heavier than the RX-7, the ZR1 has the power-to-weight advantage.

The drag race saw the Mazda RX-7 winning over the Corvette ZR1, no thanks to the fact that the Chevy driver reacted late to the signal.

In the 1,000 ft 30-mph roll contest, the ZR1 crossed the starting line ahead of the RX-7. But as the race progressed, the RX-7 caught up with the ZR1. It eventually lost to the Chevy by a few feet. The RX-7 easily won the final run (1,000 ft roll race), making the Hoonigan boys wonder if Lil Jerry lied about the actual output of his JDM drive.
