Since it was established more than a century ago, Maserati has undergone several evolutions. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the globe, Maserati hasn’t been fazed. After announcing the powerful new engine for its MC20 sports car, Maserati signaled its latest evolution with its very first electrified vehicle – the new Maserati Ghibli Hybrid sedan. Let's take a look at what the idiosyncratic Italian marque has in store for us in the EV space.

As its name implies, this Ghibli is a hybrid vehicle. Developed by the Maserati Innovation Lab of Modena, the Ghibli Hybrid embraced electrification as a way to not just improve performance, but also to cut fuel consumption and emissions. This led Maserati to reach the hybrid solution, combining a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine, a 48-volt alternator and an extra electric supercharger (e-Booster).

The mild hybrid system -- supported by a rear-mounted battery for improved weight distribution -- offers a max output 330 hp and a peak torque of 332 lb.-ft. (450 Nm) available at 1,500 rpm. The new Ghibli Hybrid can sprint from nil to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 5.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 158 mph (255 km/h).

Available in GranLusso and GranSport trims, the new Maserati Ghibli Hybrid sedan can be easily distinguished from its conventional siblings through distinct exterior and interior design features. As Centro Stile Maserati has decided, all its hybrid cars will feature a blue color, which is found not just on the exterior but also inside.

For instance, the Maserati Ghibli Hybrid features three blue side air ducts, blue brake calipers and a blue thunderbolt in the oval on the rear pillar. The embroidered seams of the seats are also in blue. Furthermore, the new sedan comes with a new front grille, with bars representing a tuning fork. Its rear light clusters now feature a boomerang-like profile seen on the 3200 GT and Alfieri concept car.
