Maserati appears poised to dive into the electric waters head first. The luxury Italian automaker just announced that they have been developing a fully electric drivetrain at their Modena facilities, and intend to debut it in two of their models soon, ostensibly as 2021 models. Combined with cryptic hints of a “major announcement” by the company this May, we anticipate a major electric revolution coming from the House of the Trident.

Electrical Activity

The Modenese company has been proactive in trying to step out of its corporate cousin and previous engine supplier Ferrari's shadow by introducing refreshed and limited edition models, a new and upcoming mid-engined sports cars, and now electric motivation. Maserati’s release of a video snippet about their first fully-electric motor has given credence to the buzz surrounding the debut of a couple of fully electric cars, namely the GranTurismo and GranCabrio models. The roman numerals MMXXI correspond to 2021, presumably the model year in which these 2 luxury electric cars will be released to the public. Maserati’s tagline in the video states that the “Music is Changing,” which refers ostensibly to the whir of electric motors over the growl of the internal combustion engine.

Power Players

No specifications have so far been announced for the new electric cars, but we expect Porsche Taycan-levels of performance and pricing. The rumors of a hybrid Ghibli and a smaller SUV than the Levante have been swirling as well.

Spring Promises

We'll probably have a better idea of what Maserati is up to this coming spring. Until then, we are glad that the prolific Italian company with an enviable heritage is going through a renaissance of sorts, even if it’s an electric one.
