It is probably fair to say we are all quite excited about the new Honda Civic Type R. The latest Type R recently broke cover in all its glory, and Honda have also recently revealed the performance statistics for the new Type R after quite a while of waiting. The 2.0-liter engine will have 315 hp, and its exterior styling is much more refined than on the previous generation. It's one very good-looking performance sedan.

Someone else who must be very excited right now is Max Verstappen. The Dutchman currently has 11 wins in the 2022 F1 season and is on course for a dominant second world title in a row, and could wrap it up in Honda’s home country of Japan. In a video posted on the Honda Australia YouTube channel, Verstappen gets a chance to drive the new Type R in Budapest, Hungary. The Hungarian GP circuit also saw Verstappen take a brilliant win from 10th on the grid. The video has the title “The Ultimate Detour” and shows Verstappen getting to grips with Honda’s newest Type R.

The Reigning F1 Champion Drives Something A Bit Different

The promotional video will of course stem from Honda’s supply of engines to the Red Bull team. They were the works engine supplier for Alpha Tauri from 2018 to 2021, and from 2019 to 2021 for Red Bull Racing. We all know too that they powered Verstappen to his 2021 world title. While Honda has officially exited F1, they are still technical partners to Red Bull who run the Honda engines under the Red Bull Powertrains badge, with the HRC logo appearing on the side of the Red Bull and Alpha Tauri cars.

The promotional video starts with Red Bull team boss Christian Horner calling up Verstappen to say he has a meeting in two hours, so he can take a one-hour break. Verstappen just wants to “check something out” before his meeting, and so he and his companions travel to the Euroring Circuit. His schedule for the day is apparently full, but no matter what one of his aides says, when Verstappen opens the garage door to where the Type R is sitting, we know what is about to happen. Verstappen then heads out on track in the new Civic Type R.

Hurling The Latest Civic Type R Around A Tight And Twisty Track

With a one-hour break, Verstappen has plenty of time to get to grips with the new Civic Type R. The video sees Verstappen really hurl the car around the track as one of his colleagues speaks down his intercom system. Verstappen also puts the car into R+mode to “hurry up” although that is not what his colleague meant! While this is just a bit of promotional fun, Verstappen was probably enjoying the chance to drive something a bit different.

Verstappen wants to know his laptimes so when he is finally told them, he keeps going round the racetrack to break the lap record. He doesn’t stop throwing the Type R around the track though until he sees the checkered flag waved, and he brings the Type R back into the pits. As he now needs to head to his next meeting, he says to his colleague “I think I’ll take the Type R instead, I’ll get there faster” and off he goes, speeding off into the distance. It is of course scripted and just to promote the new Type R, but it's great to see the car put through its paces with Verstappen at the wheel.

A Nice Detour For The Soon-To-Be Two Time F1 Champion

The video probably provided a nice little detour for Verstappen, who is surely all set to win the 2022 F1 world championship, making it back-to-back titles for himself. Verstappen has won 11 races this season and shows no signs of letting up as he crushes his opponents. Red Bull itself is also firmly placed to bring home its first constructors title since 2013, something it missed out on in 2021 as Mercedes edged them in that battle. Verstappen might wrap up at the title at Honda’s home race in Suzuka, Japan.

The new Civic Type R that Verstappen is driving in the video is something a lot of us are very excited about. The car has a 9 hp increase over the previous generation, while refined looks and a more streamlined approach make this slightly tamer Type R look all the better for it. Annoyingly, Honda has yet to reveal the pricing for the new Type R, so we are still anticipating that. But it probably won’t be long before that too is all finally revealed, and we can place our orders for this latest Civic Type R.
