It seems that Mazda may be rethinking its magical reincarnation of the quintessential sports roadster yet again. According to several reports including those from Autocar in the UK, the Japanese manufacturer is considering all possibilities including a hybrid as well as a full-electric version of the MX-5 for introduction around the mid 2020’s. This may come as a shock to some sportscar purists, but Mazda is looking at the big picture here, and is fully cognizant of the enormity and consequences of tinkering with a winning recipe. Here is why Mazda would embark on this journey and why it would be a tremendous challenge:

3 Responding to Buyers

Mazda has apparently been getting a lot of feedback from its customers who have indicated their desire for electrified cars, in either full EV or hybrid formats, and is keen to respond. Also, the allure of abundant torque in a small vehicle is certainly irresistible to a lot of buyers.

2 Focus on the Environment

Late to the electric/hybrid party, Mazda is keen on ensuring that it is seen as an environmentally progressive company, so it is looking for ways to respond in its own Kansei way.

1 Staying True to the Concept

The MX-5’s entire raison d'être has always been to capture the essence of fun, nimble and affordable motoring. Infusing hybrid or full-electrification into this successful recipe while maintaining the dynamics of its lightweight platform is rife with challenges. Time will tell if Mazda can have its cake and have its buyers willingly eat it too.
