When McLaren Automotive was formed in 2010 to replace the ‘dormant’ McLaren Cars, supercar enthusiasts could smell something special was brewing. They were right! McLaren has since then produced some of the finest supercars we’ve seen from British automotive companies. Among them is the incredible McLaren 570S. Launched in 2015, the 570S is a mid-engine supercar that’s so fast we saw it zoom past its published top speed.

Notably, the 570S has been produced in several upgraded variants over the years – we also saw the 570S GT4 racing car evolve into a road-legal 620R supercar. However, producing mainly supercars, most of McLarens cars are priced out of reach for the majority of its enthusiasts. Hence, for the stupendously wealthy folks who own them and the plethora of enthusiasts (like us) who only read about them, we’ve dug out these facts about the 570S, for all.

The people directly involved in the crafting and fabrications of great cars quite often don’t get the recognition they deserve. For the 570S – among several other people who had great inputs in the car’s production – it’s the designer, Robert Melville. The youngest of three boys, English car designer, Melville, had worked for Jaguar Land Rover and General Motors before then McLaren CEO, Anthony Sheriff, snapped him up.

He got promoted as Chief Designer at McLaren in 2015, the same year he designed the 570S, among other cars. Currently, Melville is the McLaren Director of Design.

9 Unveiled In New York

via CAR Magazine

McLaren is a British automotive company. From its McLaren Production Centre located at its headquarters in Woking, England, the company produces several supercars which include the 570S. Though it was crafted in England, the 570S made its world debut in the United States, at the 2015 New York International Auto Show.

It was showcased along with several other top cars such as the Aston Martin Vulcan, Porsche Boxster Spyder, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, as well as Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. The 570S mesmerized the audience with its impeccable and unique design.

8 Origin of The Nameplate

via automobilemag

For the production of the 570S, McLaren drew from its experience from producing the 650S and P1. The 570S gets power from a designated M838T E – a 30% redesigned version of the same 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that powered both the 650S and P1 – which helps the supercar produce 562 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque.

via GT Spirit

In Britain, 562 horsepower (using the American standard of measurement) is equivalent to 570 metric horsepower (570 PS) which is the inspiration behind the car’s nameplate, while the ‘S’ means sports. A common tradition with all McLaren numbered nameplates.

7 Vanity Mirrors

via 9tro

McLaren would look for the littlest space to slap a feature into the 570S as long as it connotes luxury or comfort – for a starting price of almost $200,000, we truly understand their plight. Consequently, this quest for total comfort led the company to fiddle with the sun visors on the 570S thinking of ways to improve them.

via GT Spirit

The result is the conversion of the sun visors’ face mirrors into vanity mirrors. That’ll come handily for those who would make the car their “home.” Also, it makes the 570S the first McLaren with vanity mirrors.

6 Stealth Storage

via Newport Beach

Quite easy to overlook the several awesome features on the 570S and one of such is its inconspicuous storage compartments. We must admit the storage space available in the 570S probably wouldn’t take more than two loaves of bread and some candy bars – but we’ve seen those save lives countless times, anyway.

via autocar

Precisely, the car has a shallow and flat 220-liter load bay underneath it and a wider 150-liter in the nose area. However, for stealth storage (or as an Easter egg, as well) there are two hidden storage spaces located in the door panels.

5 The 600LT

via SlashGear

For the 2018 model year, McLaren took the 570S and gave it the “Longtail” treatment. That’s the birth of the 600LT – becoming the third McLaren car after the 675LT and F1 GTR Longtail to receive such treatment. This treatment entails re-engineering a McLaren car for better aerodynamics, driver engagement, track-focused dynamics, power, as well as exclusivity.

via Highsnobiety

Under the hood, the 600LT has the same engine as the 570S, however, it’s been tuned to produce almost 600bhp (600 PS to be precise.) The 600LT uses the sports bucket seat from P1.

4 Origin Of The MSO X

via SlashGear

The MSO X is simply a road-legal race car based on the 570S. In celebration of the Daytona 24 race event, a US-based dealer of McLaren cars ordered a total of ten bespoke McLaren Special Operations (MSO) using the 570S GT4 race car model.

via Motor1

Called the MSO X, the cars took major design cues from the GT4 race car with features like the carbon fiber roof, titanium-made exhaust, and GT4 style rear wings for extra downforce. The cars have the same performance stats as the 570S and have all been delivered to their owners.

3 Brake Steer

via Car Guy Chronicles

Several awesome automotive technologies were deployed into the fabrication of the 570S. One of them is the brake steer – a proprietary McLaren innovation. Adopted in the P1 as well, the brake steer is a specially designed braking system that uses an open rear differential to effect an efficient distribution of power to the drive wheels by simply sending the power to the wheel with the least amount of resistance.

via Car Guy Chronicles 2774

McLaren claimed they opted for this system because it “works with fewer components and complexity.” Also, this system provides the car with quicker cornering by electronically modulating the rear brakes.

2 Pricing

via automobilemag

Though not within reach for the majority of enthusiasts who swoon over the car, yet 570S remains one of the “cheapest” supercars out there. Also, it is the first McLaren to be made available at a price below the $200,000 mark.

via McLaren Automotive

For comparison, the F1 was originally sold for over $800,000 at launch while the current McLaren production cars such as the 720S and Elva sells for $301,500 and $1,700,000, respectively. This makes the 570S the most affordable McLaren in its segment.

1 100% Hand Made

via El Espanol

McLaren cars are insanely expensive and there are several reasons attributed to this. One of them is due to the cars being completely hand made. This is unusual for an automobile production company and the 570S isn’t excluded from the special treatment.

Unlike typical manufacturing companies, the McLaren manufacturing plant in Woking, England, doesn’t have the whirring robots and conveyor belts usually associated with auto manufacturing. The building is built on the principles of calmness, quietness, efficiency, and focus which were echoed by McLaren’s former CEO, Ron Dennis.
