Watch this McLaren 720S get completely shocked by a custom electric Porsche.
We’ve seen DragTimes in his beloved McLaren 720S beat many a challenger, from Dodge Demons to uppity Lamborghinis, but never have we seen it face a challenger such as this.
What started life as a humble Porsche 944 has since seen its fortunes turn drastically. Gone is the 2.5-L inline 4-cylinder engine, replaced by a pair of 11-inch DC motors which draw 4,000 amps, 400 watts, and produce 980 hp as well as 1,500 lb-ft of on-demand torque.
That’s a lot, especially for a car that weighs just 2,450 lbs. We’re guessing that the batteries aren’t quite large enough for any reasonable range, but we’re told the owner does drive this Porsche around town as it’s completely road-legal. At least, when it’s not wearing skinny front tires and drag radials at the back.
On the other side of the track is our noble hero riding his McLaren 720S. Power is a meager 710 horses and 568 lb-ft of torque. Zero to sixty is done in 2.7 seconds with a top speed of 212 mph, and while the 720S certainly has a higher top end than the Porsche, it has nowhere near the same kind of acceleration.
That Porsche 944 has Dodge Demon levels of acceleration. As you will see in DragTime’s video on the subject.
DragTimes is certainly gracious in defeat, noting that he didn’t have a hope in Hell of catching the electric Porsche. Perhaps if it were a race around Florida then we’d see the McLaren take home the gold, but in a quarter-mile drag race, there’s just no way a McLaren can take on all that torque.
We say the Porsche run a 9.41 at 142.72 mph, which should be noted would also beat a Demon. The McLaren was no slouch at 10.156 seconds at 140.33 mph.
Next up we’ll see the Porsche take down a Demon. We’re sure of it.
