Despite having first emerged to take the world by storm way back in 1992, the McLaren F1 remains one of the most potent and desirable supercars ever built. With a provenance that includes motorsport success, as well as an influential status that led to today's booming supercar and hypercar marketplace, every last example is worth nearly its weight in gold (and not just because the engine bay was literally lined with gold from the factory). Any time an F1 shows up for sale, it's a big deal—an even bigger deal has just occurred, however, in the UK, where dealer Tom Hartley Jnr has just listed a 1996 McLaren F1 GTR Longtail for sale.

This isn't just any old McLaren F1 GTR Longtail, either, this is the first one ever built and the first of two development testers before McLaren committed to the Longtail profile for motorsport competition in 1997. It reportedly debuted in the Suzuki 1000km before going on to compete in a laundry list of Japanese events. Later, it was the first Longtail to be transformed into street-legal spec by Lanzante.

Perhaps one of the most surprising facts about the McLaren F1 is that it employs a V12 engine courtesy of BMW. That powerplant was actually de-stroked in the Longtail, from 6.1 to 6.0 liters, though the bodywork modifications that earned the "Longtail" moniker created even more downforce than the original F1 GTR, which was said to be able to drive upside down on a ceiling at 100 miles per hour. Total weight for the Longtail was a mind-numbingly low 2,006 pounds.

If You Have To Ask

The car for sale by Tom Hartley Jnr. has extensive history and features like McLaren's iconic central driver's seat, but the website lists no price. Normal F1 values hover around $15 million or so, however, so this one is sure to be worth a fair amount more. Hopefully, whoever shells out the cash to purchase this baby treats it right and drives it in anger.
