Mecum is perhaps one of the biggest auction outlets in the United States. Their auctions are regularly shown on TV, and they often sell some truly amazing and unique classic cars. And we have one of those lined up for you today. This is billed as perhaps the main attraction of the Kissimmee 2021 auction next January. It is a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, an incredibly rare car that has had a remarkable life, once being owned by Prince of Salm Salm and specially ordered in its unique graphite grey, with the blue plaid interior.

A Dominant Mercedes Sports Car

The 300SL first appeared in February 1954 and was based on the highly successful racing variant that first emerged and dominated in World Sports Cars in 1952. It paved the way for Mercedes to move forward into Grand Prix racing as well. The 300SL was innovative, lightweight, and, of course, instantly recognizable thanks to those Gullwing doors that not many cars since have actually incorporated.

Onto this remarkable example that has been set up for auction by Mecum. It was completed on the August 13th, 1956, and as mentioned above was owned by the Prince of Salm Salm and ordered in this unique color. It was purchased in 1961 by Dr. J Theodore Luros, who was a neurosurgeon from Indianapolis, Indiana. It was refinished in optional Strawberry Red Metallic, code DB543 during Luros' ownership, and was in his care until 2005. It has since received a refresh in its original Graphite Grey finish.

An Original Masterpiece

Onto some mechanical details now. It is powered by a matching number fuel-injected, 2996cc OHC straight six-cylinder engine, with dry-sump lubrication and a four-speed manual gearbox. There is fitted luggage, a Becker Mexico radio, and an owner's manual and tool kit are thrown into the purchase too. An innovation for the time, the car has fully independent suspension as well. This is a magnificent example of an incredibly rare car, and highly original and in the condition that could lead it to victory at any Concours competition.
