The original Aussie dystopian epic "Mad Max" (1979) starring Mel Gibson as a renegade cop wiping out legions of post-apocalyptic bikers has always been a favorite of mine. Years ago, my friend Al, who drove a balled out 1978 Chevy Camaro Z28 at the time, and I, with my trusty 500 hp 1971 BOSS 351 Mustang, would watch the film before heading out to race on the street. Indeed, with its gritty cinematography, compelling scenes, and souped up cars, it became something of a cult classic for others as well.

Besides Gibson, the star of the show had to be Mel's main ride. No, not the Yellow Interceptor at the beginning of the film, a 1974 Ford Falcon XB sedan, but his famous supercharged Pursuit Special, a 1973 Ford XB Falcon GT 351, where he hunts down Toecutter, Bubba Zanetti, Johnny the Boy, and the rest of the feral road crew. Luckily you can catch some of that movie magic and get a Pursuit Special of your own courtesy of Mad Max Cars.

The 1973 Ford XB Falcon GT 351 coupe pictured in the film was a model exclusive to the Australian market. Produced between 1973 and 1976 it was based on the popular Ford Falcon with more aggressive styling and a host of performance upgrades in the GT variant. She had a specially prepared U.S. built 351 Cleveland engine with 4 wheel disc brakes, scoops, fairing, and spoilers.

The car used in the movie was, of course, modified extensively for both looks and performance. The car received a Concorde front end kit, rear kicktail, MFP lights and badges, and a special black paint job. But the most memorable mod was a fake. That's right, the supercharger protruding from the hood which came to life with the lift of a shifter mounted button was non functional. But boy oh boy did it look good.
