Back in the day, getting a Mercedes-AMG or a BMW M-powered sports car would cost an arm and leg. You could have a standard model or chose the performance spec sports car version and that is it. However, that had left a massive gap in the middle that needed to be exploited. A gap that now helps democratize AMG and M performance with a mid-spec model. More so, in the entry-level space. That neatly leads us to the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 4Matic and the BMW M235i Gran Coupe. But which one should you pick?

CLA35 AMG Vs M235i: Size And Price

Mercedes-AMG CLA 35

In America, the most basic AMG tuned model on offer is the CLA 35 AMG. A four-door coupe model that packs a punch, and looks cool as it flies by down the road. In a compact size that measures 184.6-inches long, 56.7-inches tall, and 72-inches wide, the sloping roofline makes this four-door fastback look stunning and fast.

BMW M235i Gran Coupe

The BMW M235i plays in the same league. A compact four-door model with a sloping roof line that the manufacturer likes to call “Gran Coupe”. The BMW is a smaller package, being 178.2-inches long, 55.9-inches tall, and 70-inches wide. Not only does it look fast with its roof design, but it is also probably the best-looking BMW on the market thanks to its nearly perfect proportions.

While the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 retails for about $47,850, the BMW M235i Gran Coupe costs $45,500. While you may save some money going for the BMW, the Mercedes is slightly bigger and would offer better cabin space, especially thanks to a longer wheelbase.

AMG A 35 4Matic Vs M235i xDrive: Specs, Performance

Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 Dynamic

The pokey heart of the Mercedes-AMG is a small 2.0-liter, turbocharged engine. One that makes 302 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Not only does this motor come paired with the 7-speed twin-clutch automatic, but the CLA 35 also uses the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.

The BMW M235i also uses a 2.0-liter, turbo 4-cylinder. But it is a touch more powerful at 306 hp and packs more torque at 332 lb-ft. However, unlike the CLA 35, the M235i uses an 8-speed automatic transmission. The BMW M235i also features an all-wheel drive that BMW likes to call xDrive.

The performance of both cars on paper is also identical. Both the CLA 35 and the BMW sprint from 0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds and will do also do a 155 mph.

BMW M235i Gran Coupe Dynamic

The CLA 35 and the M235i also feature uprated suspension and chassis tuning to offer a better cornering experience. The BMW is reportedly better suited to offer a more engaging drive, the CLA 35 manages to ride better, and the rear-biased all-wheel-drive also features drift mode. Additionally, both cars feature specially tuned exhausts. The BMW does pipe in some synthesized exhaust sounds through the speakers. The Mercedes features a “Silent Start” mode that allows you to exit your house late at night without waking up your neighbors.

AMG A 35 Vs M235i: In-Cabin Experience

BMW M235i Gran Coupe Interior

The M235i’s interior is quite understated. It looks contemporary and gets quite a few M Performance treatments with a chunky steering wheel, leather seats, and a lot of tech. Of course, the diver has a digital dash and the touchscreen infotainment runs the latest iDrive software.

Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 Interior

The CLA 35’s cabin packs a similar level of tech. However, it goes a step further in the sporty direction. Spend the extra $600 for the sporty Alcantara leather AMG steering wheel, and it would look, and feel just right. AMG has given a liberal amount of blingy silver trim on the dash and the turbine-style air vents and mood lighting. The single-pane touchscreen infotainment system and the driver display mounted on top of the dash just feel a touch more special to be around. Thanks to the longer dimensions and wheelbase of the CLA 35, the cabin is roomier than the M235i.

BMW M235i Gran Coupe Rear

In terms of performance, both the CLA 35 and the M235i have their own characteristics that shine through over the other. When it comes to looks, they are both extremely handsome. The BMW looks better from the front, the Mercedes is impressive from the rear. Both models are true coupes with frameless doors. So it all comes down to splitting hairs.

For those looking for a better driving experience, at a better price, the BMW M235i xDrive will be an ideal choice. However, for a more wholesome package, the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 4Matic looks to be a more mature, yet bold choice. It costs a couple thousand more than the BMW, but as a more wholesome package, the CLA 35 would be more exciting to live with every day, especially with extra room in the cabin.
