In modern Mercedes history, its high-performance AMG branch’s only true supercar is the highly-competent GT. The RWD V8 Coupe started off with the GT S back in 2015, followed by the GT C roadster and the high-performance GT R in 2017, and even though all those variants are more than enticing, none could hold its own against other pedigree supercar rivals.

However, for the 2021 model year, the model jumped into a completely new realm of performance with the release of the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, boasting a huge boost in power and plenty of chassis tuning to make it a worthy competitor that matches up against the likes of the Ferrari F8, Lamborghini Huracán, and the Porsche GT3 RS.

As the latest model to wear the Black Series badge after the amazing 2012 SLS AMG Black Series, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT BS is also one of the most extreme iterations ever. Let’s take a detailed look at its specs.

Unlike most traditional sports cars, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series tucks its monstrous powerplant neatly behind the front axle. The engine is essentially a revised version of the 4.0-liter Biturbo V8 from the regular GT R, but it features a flat-plane crankshaft and a larger pair of turbochargers that provide a maximum of 24.6 psi of boost. These enhancements allow the GT R Black Series to deliver up to 720 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque available from 2000 to 6000 rpm. The high-performing mill mates with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that directs power to the rear wheels, allowing the GT R Black Series to blast from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds, while also able to achieve the standing quarter mile in just 10.3.

Additionally, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT BS’ engine redlines at 7200 rpm, and it has a flat-plane-optimized firing rate that ensures a consistent gas flow, which is what enables such a healthy torque range and a top speed of 202 mph.

When it comes to pure track-tearing machines, chassis tuning and subsequent driving dynamics are just as - if not more important than engine performance. Mercedes knows this all too well, which is why the AMG GT Black Series makes sure to deliver ultra-precise handling capabilities. It makes use of forged-aluminum double wishbone suspension on both axles, with racing-derived spherical bearings, and AMG high-performance coil-overs combined with a predictive Ride Control adaptive damping system.

It also provides three preset driving modes to choose from: Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus. Additionally, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series uses a front dual-adjustable torsion bar made out of lightweight carbon fiber, and a triple-adjustable steel one in the rear.

Absolutely everything about the AMG GT BS prioritizes form over function, and that includes its exterior design and overall chassis. Compared to the regular GT R, the GT BS has an enlarged front apron with a manually-adjustable front splitter and a carbon fiber diffuser, front louvered wings, and a full lightweight carbon fiber roof.

In the rear, it finishes things off with a double carbon fiber diffuser along with a gigantic two-piece carbon wing with an automatically adjustable electric flap. These aero elements - which include additional underbody enhancements, allow the Mercedes GT Black Series to produce up to 880 pounds of peak downforce at 155 mph.
