Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series Will Produce Serious Power

Mercedes-AMG is hard at work making a new Black Series version of the GT supercar, and it may be out sooner than you think.

We recently got our first look at the Mercedes-AMG GT R PRO which debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and while all the fancy suspension and aerodynamic upgrades were nice, we were a little disappointed that the PRO didn’t get any more power than the GT R’s 577 horses. And by a little disappointed, we mean a lot disappointed.

Never fear. According to AMG chief Tobias Moers, a more powerful GT is coming, and it might be here sooner than you think.

In an interview with Motor Trend, Moers talked about how AMG is still working on a fully electric vehicle (out sometime in 2023), and that even though Mercedes as a company is fully adopting autonomous driving features, all AMG vehicles will always have a steering wheel.

And he said that the GT would be getting its own entry into the storied Black Series of AMG products.

In case you’d never heard of it, Black Series are limited-edition runs of Mercedes-AMG vehicles that have the maximum possible performance. They’re the best of the best, and a noble line that the GT desperately deserves to be a part of.

Moers said virtually nothing about the Black Series GT other than it exists and that it would be “competitive” with other performance supercars. Those cars being the McLaren 720S and Porsche 911 GT2 RS, both supercars with over 700 hp on tap.

This means that any Black Series GT would at least have that many horses in order to compete with the big boys. It would also likely have all the various suspension and handling upgrades that were given to the GT R PRO at this year’s LA Auto Show.

Motor Trend went as far as saying that 750 hp isn’t far outside the realm of possibility, and would definitely give the Black Series GT a leg up on the competition.

We might not have to wait too long for a Black Series GT either. Moers said that testing would begin in the summer of 2019, so we might see the Black Series as early as 2020.
