Mercedes-Benz is known for bringing plenty of functional and practical cars to our roads with its usual luxurious flair. However, the German-based manufacturer decided to mix things up when it introduced the AMG GT in 2015.

This eye-catching car comes in coupe or roadster options, and it's a thrill-a-minute. The AMG grand tourer is one of the shining jewels in the Mercedes-Benz crown, and wherever it goes, the sound of a growling twin-turbo V8 quickly follows.

But it's not the only throaty grand tourer around, and there are plenty of menacing machines that rival the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT. Fans of the AMG GT will think it shapes up favorably against any competitor, but does it?

We're taking a closer look at how the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT compares with its rivals.

As we mentioned, Mercedes-Benz introduced its AMG GT in 2015. The German manufacturer created an instant classic, especially where the two-seat coupe and roadsters are concerned. There is also a four-door version available for those who wish to enjoy the Mercedes-Benz V8 but still have space for passengers.

For this elite level of performance, prices begin from $118,600. This is the coupe price which is significantly less than the roadster, which is, in all honesty, the more attractive option thanks to its looks. The top trim roadster, the AMG GT C, is available from $165,100.

The AMG GT is capable of hitting 198 mph and 0-62 mph in 3.6 seconds, with its V8 engine putting out 585 hp. Engines across all trim levels are hand-built, and the output varies depending on which one you choose.

Then there is the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Black Series, which takes things up a notch. This special edition AMG GT comes with a 4.0-liter Biturbo engine that's capable of 730 hp and 0-62 in 3.2 seconds. Mercedes-Benz offers a starter battery, a Race drive mode, and a sleek Stealth Edition to tempt buyers.

Rivals To The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT is a special car, but it's not the only grand tourer that's designed to impress. The AMG GT is a luxury grand tourer that requires a significant investment to purchase one. That puts it among the elite sports cars around, which means there is some stiff competition for the Mercedes.

There is plenty of competition in this field, with the likes of the Porsche 911 Turbo, Audi R8, and Aston Martin Vantage staking a claim for the best. Even cars like the McLaren 570 GT and Maserati MC20 can be considered a rival despite being in a slightly higher price bracket.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT is one of the best-looking cars on our roads. For that reason, the styling alone puts the Mercedes ahead of the competition. Sure the Porsche 911 is an icon, and the Aston Martin has beautiful lines, but few cars look quite like the AMG GT.

Not only is the AMG GT a showstopper to look at, but it sounds incredible as well. It's a drag-racing dream thanks to its power and sound.

Many grand tourers are meant to be designed for long-distance journeys, but often, they don't make the driver feel all that welcome. The same can't be said for the AMG GT, thanks to its welcoming cabin. It's a place you could spend hours just listening to the tailpipe roar while the monster V8 pins you in your seat.

The steering has been vastly improved from previous editions of the AMG GT, which makes it exciting to take corners in. Before the steering felt flighty, but now you can be confident that it's going to go exactly where you want it to.

Like many cars, the infotainment system is important in the Mercedes-Benz, and it's a highlight in the AMG GT. When traveling at speeds, drivers need an intuitive and easy-to-use system, something that the Mercedes provides.

The AMG GT Could Improve In Certain Departments

We know the AMG GT has been built for driving fun, but when you're not going for the checkered flag, it's a tough ride. Thanks to the super stiff suspension, the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT rattles your bones.

Not that it's really possible to hit the top speed in the AMG GT on normal roads, but this could be quicker compared to its rivals. A top speed of 198 mph in the Mercedes-Benz is impressive, but the Porsche 911 Turbo S and Audi R8 both max out at 205 mph.

While the cabin is undoubtedly luxurious, there isn't a whole lot of room inside. Again, cars like the Porsche 911 and Aston Martin Vantage feel that bit more spacious. Long journeys can leave you feeling cramped and stiff with limited movement options from the driver's seat.

Like with many sports cars, most people aren't going to invest their money in the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT for its practicality. However, most people will need some space for their cargo, especially if they are planning on taking a road trip. The lack of truck space in the AMG GT is a letdown, however, and this could be improved.

Overall, though, there are few cars in the grand tourer category that can match the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT. This car feels special from the moment you sit behind the wheel, but for the money, we would be tempted to opt for the Porsche 911 Turbo S.
