The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is the king of the luxury SUV segment. It’s a vehicle that’s the top selection for anyone who drives in style. It’s also meant for people who loves to indulge themselves in tech features and luxury and - from the hefty price tag - very few folks can actually afford it. And one thing’s for sure: The Mercedes G-class isn’t everyone’s typical SUV. Mercedes-Benz created the G-Wagon to be a reliable, stylish, user-friendly, affordable, and off-road choice.

The G-wagon came from humble beginnings in the 1970s. Over the last couple of decades, it’s evolved into the awesome SUV it is today and has become everyone’s top choice. But even in spite of its evolution, the G-Wagon always maintains its heritage. It’s very honest about what it is, and that’s why people love it so much. Because of its practical design and capabilities, the G-Wagon became a status symbol in the automotive industry, and likely so.

Today, the legendary Mercedes-Benz G-Class belongs in its own league. It ranks near the top of the luxury large SUV segment, mainly for its fusion of luxury and tech with comfort and authority. But a recent Business Insider report (spotted by AutoEvolution) shows that Germany’s G-Wagon faces yet another price increment in 2022. This will make it one of the most expensive SUVs, with starting prices of $131,750 for the base trim and up to $156,450 for the G63 AMG.

While the G-Wagon is the best SUV right now, it’s also become the most expensive choice yet. Here’s why.

Lately, Mercedes-Benz documented the changes made to the G-Class which, among other things, highlighted a rise in the retail price of the G-Wagon. While these changes were initially assumed to apply only to the home market. But, they will apply everywhere, according to the German brand. In the document, the brand further stated that the price increment “must be borne by the customers."

Currently, the starting price of the base trim of the G-Class, the G550, is at €99,680 in the German market, or $110,044 in U.S. From March 22, the company states that the price will rise up to 6.2%, after adding an inflation surcharge of €5,200 (or $5,793), and an extra charge through series enrichment of €965 ($1,075). This will throw the price at $131,750. Further inflation charges of 6.2%, along with destination charges, and VAT would put the price within the confines of $140,968.50 for the US market. But we’ll be sure once the Brand announces the final Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP).

The highest G-Class trim, the G 63 AMG, also faces a huge price increase from March 22. The price of the G63 starts at €136,725 in Germany, around $153,300. From the already hefty price, the Mercedes also throws in €8,325 ($9,274) as a series enrichment premium, then €7,000 ($7,798) as an inflation surcharge. Add VAT and destination charges would send the price of the G63 skyrocketing to around $175,022.40 on the U.S. market.

What Makes The New 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class So Expensive?

The brand debuted the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class in September of last year. As far as the G-Wagon’s 2022 model year, the Mercedes revised the standard equipment and packages on its luxury SUV. This includes an intriguing 12.3-inch digital gauge display and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen. These two features pretty much steal the show on the inside of the G-Class. It also comes with some amazing standard features. This includes a 64-color interior ambient lighting system, and a Burmester stereo system. Under the hood, both trims still pack a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, with the base trim’s engine making 416 horsepower and the G63 AMG producing up to 577 horsepower.

A highlight of the 2022 G-Class is the adaption of a new concept, which not only changes the exterior but also the interior. According to the brand, it’s the first of its kind in the history of the G-Class. This also comes with new names, such as Professional Line. With the introduction of these new features, Mercedes aims at reducing the intricacy of the G-Wagon’s production going forward. This change will also improve the logic of the selection sheet.

Also, one thing that makes the G-Class so expensive is its value. As we know, a majority of vehicles undergo a rapid depreciation as soon as they make their way out of the car lot. Not the G-Wagon. They are some of the most durable SUVs ever built. A used G-Wagon can sell between 150% and 200% of the sale price, with some exceeding the price point. So, buying a new Mercedes-Benz G-Class is the best bet. That said, the price increment won’t affect the brand’s rich group of buyers from enjoying all the luxury and power that the new G-Class has to offer.
