MG certainly set tongues wagging recently with the unveiling of the highly radical Cyberster electric sports car. This was an EV concept with some pretty extreme styling, unlike any MG we had ever seen before. It is a bold move, but it wasn’t just for show it seems. A report from British publication Autocar states that MG has announced plans to put the bold new concept into production, announced via a post on the Chinese social media site, WeChat. The MG company is now Chinese-owned, hence the post on WeChat.

More Than 5000 Registrations For The Car Have Been Received

The post was made by MG parent company SAIC’s design division. Autocar report that the post confirmed the company had received more than “5000” registrations to the MG CyberCUBE crowdfunding platform which would determine whether the car would be put into production. It is set to be a right-hand drive for custom markets which should include the UK, where MGs have been a fixture for many years. MG had hoped to gain 5000 reservations for the car by the end of July and it appears they have achieved that goal.

The Cyberster Is A Vision Of The Future

The company views the Cyberster as a “vision of the future” to preview new technologies whilst also lending many design cues from MGs of the vest, such as the MG B which was first launched back in 1962. Autocar states that the production version will be tamer but still stay true to the concept. It is overall an incredibly radical-looking machine, with a sleek and stylish design that is focussed on aerodynamic efficiency. MG is not that well known for producing particularly wild-looking cars, so this was a pretty big departure for the company.

No Technical Information Yet Released On The Cyberster

No technical details have yet been released by MG as to how fast the car will be and the exact architecture of its electric power. But Autocar says that it will be based on a bespoke EV architecture and will offer just shy of 500 miles range at 497 miles, already putting it in the ballpark with the very best from Tesla. Its 0-62 time could be in the region of 3.0 seconds and it will even have 5G connectivity. It is certainly a car to watch with much interest.
